Hi All,

Recently I came across ad of used Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM which is one year old and manufactured in May-2008. This is going to cost me $1300 and original price is $1799.
(After manipulating all possible ways I finally raised the funds for this one.)

I will get Canon UV filter with this apart from all other inclusive things.

I want to know if this is a good price for this lens? Is the advent of Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM going to affect the prices of original one to lesser in near future?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

i've seen used ones go from low 1400's to the mid 1500's but varies pending condition of the lens.

here's a search result of past "for sale" on that lens... you can get a good idea of the condition of lens vs price...

The one in discussion is in it's prestine condition and so I am very much inclined towards it.

IMO:
with the release of the mkII version of this lens, there are "tons" on the mkI's being sold. Look over at fm and you'll see 15 or so used mkI's on the first 2 pages. The mkII seems to be dealing out some stellar shots so a few peeps are selling their mkI's.
If you wait a bit, I bet it won;t be long till you see the mkI's drop even further as the used market get saturated in that flavor.

I've seen one in FM for 1250, I was very tempted.

But as SBK1 stated, I agree the market will soon be flooded with the MK1 and the prices will eventually drop further, so if you can wait, I think you can pick one up for cheaper 2-3 months down the road. That's what I am planning to do as well.

But the ones which are selling might be the older lenses the one I am planning to buy has UW code. So it does not have the issue of soft focus.

The older lenses had this problem.

In good condition, you can get one for $1500. New is $1800 on lists. I know the new II version is out, but the I version is still excellent. So, I doubt too many people are unloading their's. I'm not yet.

I am hobbyist and not a professional photographer but what I always look for is to buy the best so that I don't feel like I should have bought the better version by spending little more.

Little confused and undecided at this point of time.

I've been watching them for quite a while. If that lense is truely "pristine" and only a year old, I would jump on it for $1300. If not, pm me the sellers info... :D

The one that is selling for $1250 is not even worth giving a look since it has "tiny" crack on the glass.

Also it is old lens and has many scratches on body as well.. After seeing that I guess $1300 is very good deal for what I have seen.

Totally disagree. Those who suffer "upgraditis" have already put theirs on the market and have sold for less than they should have to feed their addiction. The price will settle at $1500-1600 soon.
