My 13 year old son and I shot motocross for the first time today. Through trial and error we found that 1/400 seemed to give us the highest keep rate and still showed some good motion in the pictures. Mid say sun really is tough compared to the aviation I normally shoot. Here are a few for you to enjoy.

Not bad for first time ,only suggestion I would give is move around the track and get different shots.
I usually shoot 1/2000 or higher ,I like to freeze the action .
I really like the back drop of the city.
If you get a chance you should go to the Canadian Nationals motocross in the summer that would be
fun to shoot.

Unlike aviation, I thought motorsports was supposed to tell a story by not cropping tightly.

We took a bunch at 1/2000 and they are sharp. I overheard some of the younger riders talking about the nationals in norhtern Alberta, and they were saying it is the best course they have ridden which motivates me to drive the 6 hours.

I think it depends on what your trying to accomplish with the photo. The pics with the city in the background are cool but normally a tighter crop on MX and roadracing gives a more dramatic appeal....but hey that's just my opinion! You should def do the drive and go take some pics!!

I doubt it, with all the construction going on downtown, there are cranes everywhere.

I looked through the pictures and the only one that has a shot is this one. It's not really a keeper but you asked for it.

Actually the shots don't look too bad...I would try and get them in a bit closer and have them fill the frame more and the only bad thing that you can't do much about except try and get better angles is the background. It's pretty distracting. I don't know what else is around the location, but if you can find a better background to shoot against, I would try and do that. :)
