Cheers Kurt, pretty pleased with both the hover and mantis fly shots myself.

very sharp eyes for a flight shot, congrats. The Mantis Fly is very pretty, wish we had some blue sky here.

Good grief, how in the hell did you manage to get a bug in flight? AND it's super sharp! Very curious what lens you were using.

The lens was the canon EF 100mm f2.8 lens. Shot with a 50D, f13, 1/250th shutter, 580EXII mounted on camera with a Lumiquest Softbox (flash in manual mode set to 1/2 power from memory)

It is difficult to time the shot just right through the view finder so I find that the best way for me is to use the live view function of the 50D for these shots. I have the focus set on manual and it is set to closest focus distance (i.e. 1:1). With live view I can be watching the hover directly to align myself and then switch to the screen to track him much easier. I use my arms to get the focus and sure I miss plenty of shots, but occasionally I get one or two right.

Here is a couple more captured with this same method ...

Thanks for sharing Andrew. Hope you did not get stunk by them...

I am using a different setup for macro and honestly, never thought the 100mm could do so well.

Well done!!!
