Hi, first time poster here. Feel free to send me packing if this is not the place to ask this.

I wanted to try a different setup today. A PocketWizard PlusII on a 5D MkII firing a PocketWizard PlusII connected to 580EXII as the master, a 420EX as the slave. The 580 fires without any problem but the 420 fires after a brief delay(maybe a half second). If I mount the 580 in the shoe then the 420 fires simultaneously. Now I suppose I could achieve a really cool effect with a long enough exposure but that's not what I want. I would like to have both flashes fire simultaneously with neither one mounted on the shoe.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to do this without having to use something other than the PocketWizards?

I tried using different settings but the 580 will act as a master only when it is in ETTL mode so Manual and Multi mode will not fire the 420.

BigG,
Thanks for the link. That pretty much answers my question. A lot of additional info in there as well.

Austin.Manny,
That would do it but I would also need something like this (external link)

I tried using different settings but the 580 will act as a master only when it is in ETTL mode so Manual and Multi mode will not fire the 420.

You're problem is the fact that the 420EX only works in E-TTL mode and does not have a manual flash feature so there is no way you'll be able to trigger the 420EX with a 580EX as a master triggered by a PW Plus II. For this "hybrid" triggering to work, all the flashes need to be in manual mode and the 420EX can't meet that requirement.

You can use a separate PW unit to trigger the 420EX but it'll fire at full power all the time, again, because it can't be controlled manually. And E-TTL does not work with any RF remote system unless the system supports E-TTL operation, like the PW MiniTT1 and FlexTT5.
