Macro DSLR Speed Challenge #68
In the kitchen

Since Daniel2000 had a "Bathroom" challenge, I thought I'd pick another room. The kitchen is full of great macro subjects. Anything goes as long as it's found in the kitchen!

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR camera
2. Lens - Any lens, or attachment that can give Macro photos (ex. extension tubes, bellows, macro filters, reverse mounted lens and of course a true macro lens.).
3. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
4. Size - Please see the Image posting rules.
5. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
6. Posting -
* ONE MACRO PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.
* Photo Name/Title in the message.
* Camera model & lens used in the message.
* Post brief Exif data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used in the message.
* Notes - anything you feel you need to explain.
7. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
8. Questions - Use PM
9. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - 12:00 PM (noon) EST (Eastern) Friday, April 9th, 2010. Winner will be announced shortly thereafter.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

Condensation

My mom was steaming some Chinese dessert (年糕) in a large pot with a glass lid. I saw the steam condense into droplets on the glass lid and took this photo.

Thanks to all the entrants this week! As always, I love seeing what you come up with for the theme. Here are my comments on the images for this round. Remember, these are just my thoughts and perspectives on the shots, for whatever they're worth.

Purple Puppy and "Condensation" - What a great image to start off the challenge! I loved the abstract idea, and something about it was mezmerizing. I'll make sure to look at my glass tops a little closer from now on when I cook. This was a unique take on the theme!

monty28428 and "Morton's" - I'm guessing that's the edge of the pouring spout on the carton? This was another unique perspective that was also an intriguing abstract. I like the faint hint of a receding triangle going back to the white line on the left (the back edge of the spout?).

flakspammer and "Blue Glass" - I like the colors in the image, especially the transition from the blue to green, but there just wasn't enough in the shot to hold my attention for long. My eye just wandered around with no real subject to focus on.

Jason C and "Firedrop" - I loved the nice complimentary colors in this. It's unusual seeing some of the flames inverted though. The yellow/orange does stand out like a drop. What kind of burner was this?

John_B and "Peas and Carrots" - Great detail and nice composition & lighting. I love the veins in the pod on the left.

wayner87 and "Washed Fruit" - I confess this makes me want to go eat an orange. The water on the fruit is a nice touch. I think I'd prefer a slightly different composition with more emphasis on the the texture of the rind.

jetcode and "the future is certain..." - Looks like someone had some kind of egg-filled dish recently! I like the contrasting colors of the brown eggs and the white interior of the cracked shells. I get what you're trying to do with the image, but this composition just isn't speaking to me. I find myself looking at the broken egg at the top more than anything else.

Warl0rd and "Fork & Spoon" - So how many tries did it take to get those balanced just right? :-) I like the unusual perspective, especially the refraction in the spoon. I think maybe a different base like a solid reflective surface (or maybe matte) would have made for a stronger image. The texture of what it's sitting on now is a bit distracting to me. I really like the concept though.

TammyC and "With just a pinch of salt"- What a cool shot! I love the cubes in the individual salt grains on the table. The depth of field is just right to me. I find myself just getting lost in looking at the detail in the area in focus, and putting the edge of the salt shaker really makes the image to me. Nicely done!

I'm giving this week's challenge to TammyC and "With just a pinch of salt". I just kept coming back to this image. It was a creative idea and well executed shot. (BTW, I hope you tossed a little salt over your shoulder after you were through. ;))

Runner up goes to Purple Puppy and "Condensation"
. I usually have a hard time with abstracts, but this one really intrigued me.

Thanks again to all who participated this week! I hope you had fun shooting things in the kitchen!
