Just got an e-mail, westcott is having a decent sale, save $100 on the apollo, $150 including bracket and 8' stand. Pretty decent deal. Guess the cheetah and ebay knock-offs are making a dent.

Yeah, and Adorama has the Apollo 28 for $114. I'm wondering when the Ezyboxes will start to fall too.

I think you're right Derek. With all the ebay and Chinese knockoff's that are actually of decent quality, it may very well be affecting some of the other manufacturers with what some might consider to be the same or similar products at a significantly higher price.

I recently bought a Westcot 28 inch softbox and reflector kit. When I got the unit, I was a little disappointed. I found that I had to go through extra hoops if I wanted to tilt the softbox on a light stand. I thought about returning the unit, but ended up keeping it. I did a little home work and came to the conclusion that the Cheetahstand Q box 24 would work. I emailed them with a few technical questions, and followed up with a phone call to Edward. I am extremely happy with the Qbox 24. Build quality and the light output have proven to be first class.

Regards,

I'm glad I saw this thread. I also got the email and was thinking of springing for the apollo kit or perhaps the umbrella kit.
However, I'd be grateful if someone could tell me the following:
Is the apollo kit actually a good deal, or would I be better off putting together my own lightstand, flash bracket combo from B&H?
I just don't have enough experience to know whether the "sale" price for the kit is in fact a good deal or not.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't see any change in B&H price, still the same old $120.

Has anyone done the Flex/AC5/580exii combo inside the Apollo? I know the Lastolite Ezybox and the Cheetah Qbox 24 by their design of shooting through a hole in the back doesn't fit without a different bracket solution.
But, since the apollo has a different entry point, I was thinking that wouldn't be an issue. The only thing I'm wondering is that the flash head may sit too high in the box causing a less than ideal / uneven light.

The bare SB and bracket is $120 and free shipping.

Kit is $143 and $17 shipping to west coast. So $40 for cheap stand, IMHO.

I would think with the flex TT5 underneath the flash would make the flash sit very very high in the Westcott softbox which would not make for very good efficiency or evenness. I had the Westcott 28" and the flash sits very high in the softbox.

To use a flash on a TT5 effectively in a 28" Apollo softbox you'd definitely have to modify or DIY a bracket or method of getting the flash head lower and closer to the axis of the umbrella. Right out of the box, if you did use a flash on a TT5 it would place the flash head just under the top of the box. I recall that an SB-800 with no trigger mounted was already well up in the top 1/3 of the box. It would be great if you wanted to create an asymmetrical softbox. :D

Anyone knows if a 580EX-II inside a 28" Apollo softbox will trigger using ST-E2?
