5d mark ii vs 7d

What is your choice and why?

Apples and Oranges. Depends on your needs, your situation, your goals for which piece of equipment. Just my opinion, but I don't see 'comparisons between these two photograpahic tools as really being productive unless you just want a listing of specs which can be found most anywhere.

I chose the 7D over both the 5D MK II and the 1D MK IV, because the 7D fit my 'birding' hobby best.

Both. They are both excellent cameras that together will cover anything I want to do.

I'd seriously also consider a used 1D Mark III if you are at this price point and shooting things that call for the IQ of the 5D2 and the AF performance and frame speed of the 7D. The 1D3 bests the performance of the 7D with IQ that is pretty close to the 5D2.

When I decided on a new body I went with a 7D. 5Dmk2's awesome but I wanted a better AF system.

am i the only one with a 5d who doesn't have trouble focusing?

After owning both 7D and 5D2 now all I can say people are right when they say both cameras have there place, but, for me personally the 7D is just something else. That camera just has this something special about it even though its not FF.

For what ever its worth Im selling my 5D2 and going back to the 7D in the next week. I just really enjoyed using that camera even though the image IQ king is the 5D2 no doubt about it and even then I think the 7D is very close in IQ. And to the 7D Im sorry I ever betrayed you, Im coming back, lol!!

I'll buy it As a backup. Howmuch?

I don't have any real issues with the focus system. Last weekend shot a snowboarding competition with long lenses. This weekend a live concert at ISO3200 with the camera in AI Servo.

Could the 5DII have a better AF system. Of course. Does that mean I don't get the vast majority of my shots in focus. No.

If I shot close in with mid length lenses of things coming at me at fast speed, I probably would have a problem. In that case I would buy a 1D. Since I rarely, if ever, shoot those type of things, I am/was not willing to give up the IQ of the 5DII. I recently made the decision to buy a 300F4IS instead of a 7D. No regrets.

How big is the IQ jump? i'm in the same warp as you. I'm using a 7D, but I will mostly be shooting portraits. I want the 5D2 so bad, but I will only be using the 50mm 1.8 since that is the only lens I have. Is it worth giving up the 7d + 28-135mm for the 5D with just the 50mm? btw I will be buying a light kit to use my wireless flash with. What would be the better camera for the long run btw I will be buying another lens next year.
