In the press relase conference in Japan.Those department head/CEO made their speech respectively.
I have read the original Japanese and translated Chinese content, a few points to you.
First and the most important:The whole EOS line will have new product this year.
Second, in world's market Canon rules in both DC and DSLR. In japan their sales in terms of money is highest as well.
Canon will aim at FULL WIN in all levels .
SED will be annouced this year as well.

SED?

Which speech are you talking about? Hopefully not the one from late last year. Was the speech today during the 450D announcement?

If it includes the remarks about the "whole EOS line..." is there any chance of providing the link to the Japanese press release you mention?

Bob.

A quick Google came up with this:

Plasma and LCD HDTVs may soon be sharing shelf space at your local electronics store with a new flat panel technology called SED TV. Developed jointly by Canon and Toshiba; SED stands for Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display.

oh is it the screen that is probably a couple of millimetres thin?

There are super cool. But I'll stick with an LCD in my camera atm because of possible cost.

Better be careful with that translation... they've upgraded the XD, XXD and XXXD series. Maybe, with care for nuance, that's deemed the whole EOS line...? Anyone understand the original well enough to comment?

Tony

Edit: AltaVista Babelfish translation: "2008, the new product is thrown to all category of single-lens reflex."

Yep. actually
In;[・2008年、一眼レフの全カテゴリーに新製品を投入する。]
2008年=Year 2008
一眼レフ=SLR
の全カテゴリー=(SLR)'s every category
に新製品を投入する。=will have new products.

FYI, I am a Chinese who is enthusiastic about Japanese animations, to some extent, I can undertsand them...

A quick Google came up with this:

SED is tight. Contrast levels at 100000:1. It is very similar to OLED, which is spectacular. Got to see them at CES. If you do a lot of work with clients on site, you will love this new display.

That assumes that it makes it. SED is the source of lots of litigation, which makes it a dicey proposition to time.

Didn't Toshiba pull out of its SED development agreement with Canon? Interesting (if true) that Canon's still working on it as I really thought it was deader than dead. My understanding was that everyone in the flat panel industry has shifted to OLED as the future.

Actually, the way I understand it was the Canon bought Toshiba out of the project last year, after a company that had licensed technology to Canon complained that they violated the contract by sharing it with Toshiba. The buyout was the resolution to the legal issues, but put Canon about a year behind. They still have a technical advantage, as they can produce 50" plus sets with OLED-like contrast and black levels, but the falling price points of flat panels in general have them taking their time. They did not show the sets on the floor at CES, but they may have been in their private suites, where they hide the "good stuff". I understand from some of my customers (not my "canon rep:)") that they continue to work on them.
