I recently started using PS CS2, and am having a problem with what appears to be memory usage. When I open a photo for editing, I can perform a few functions and eventually CS2 will stall and hang for about a minute. Then it will catch back up and work for another function, then hang again for 1 minute, etc.

I never had this problem with CS or PS7, and haven't ever changed any performance settings from default.

BTW, I run a Shuttle pentium 4 3 point something with 2GB of Corsair valu ram, and a ATI 9700 pro for display.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Check the Memory settings in Preferences and also are you using Adobe Bridge with it?

Adobe ridge is a memory hog, but like you said 2GB of Corsair RAM should be more than plenty

FSB may be the bottleneck.

Blame it on Bridge, it will persist until it has finished creating all of the previews for the images in the folder. It usually only affects people who take lots of pictures and then put them into a single folder. I have learned to keep my folders under 500 images if I know I am going to be using PS CS2. Same problem happened when running PS7 or CS, but not as bad as with CS2 bridge. I usually open the folder and then go get a snack while it does its thing, then it runs fine.

Just my experience.

Why not export the cache? Then Bridge only has to scan each folder the first time.
