Are step up rings safe?

Hey all, as per title, are step up rings safe?

Right now I have the gear in my signature, and I do a decent amount of video shooting. I'm a student so I can't (or won't) afford a mattebox + 4x4" / 4x6.5" ND filters + donut yet, but I do have a single 77mm ND8 Hoya filter. Neither can I afford different sizes of CPL's and NDs...

Question is simple - are step up rings safe to use? Meaning that I do not have to keep adjusting it, or making sure it's tight throughout my shoot etc. The worst thing to happen would be to have my only ND filter shatter on a bright shoot.

I have used set-up rings for lens for quite a few years- havent faced any issues so far.

should be no problem...but be careful of over tightening them and make sure you thread them together correctly

Sure are. If you can find a brass one that would be best, but most are aluminum. Just be careful when screwing filters on and make sure you do not cross thread them.

Make sure you get a filter wrench to fit. They can lock up on occasion, and are a pain to remove.
