My cousin is a dentist and uses 5D with 100mm f 2.8 macro lens. He swears by them. He and I both enjoy photography and share similar set up.

Most orthodontists have used DSLR+macro+ringflash to show the teeth of their patients before and after the job (braces) is done. However, general dentists they do not need this system since they use in mouth digital color camera (looks like the electric brush) to see the bad teeth specifically.

Well, I would beg to differ on that only orthodontists would benefit from before/after photos. Whenever a new patient comes in wondering what his/her options are when wanting to improve upon their smile, I bring out my portfolio selecting cases that are pertinent to their situation. It helps to build patient confidence when they learn that these are actual cases that I restored. Just a few examples:

And I do also have the handheld intraoral camera as well. The resolution on that is pretty pathetic, but it's sufficient to document most decay/cracks and to reach places that won't require cracking open the retractors and larger mirrors.

My dentist uses a 20D, Siggy 105 macro and a Siggy ringflash. He photographs every patient's teeth as part of the initial consultation and takes another set after he's performed a bit of jiggery-pokery. He gives everyone a nice little portfolio with all the shots in so you can see exactly what he's been doing. Best dentist I've had by a mile :)

EDIT: and she is not happy with the results of the nikon. However, I don't think she has totally caught on to using it yet either.

I'm a dentist. I use a 7D 60mm macro and a canon ring flash. I used to use a 20D with 105 sigma macro and sigma ring flash, not as good as what I use now.

The 100mm allows you to be further away from the mouth for macro shots but you have to have a pretty large room to get the distance for facial shots

Our orthodontist has a rebel, IIRC a 450D, + Canon 100mm macro and ringflash.
