Ok so i have some spare cash.. was looking for a lens in the 17- gap to replace my kit lens but still use my 24-105 so only a small gap.. well the 17-40 is ummmm EXPENSIVE!!!!! and an efs????

so anyway.. i still use the onboard flash...

for the last 2hrs i have been reading.. and i have come up to ..
1. use onboard flash as last resort
2. never use onboard flash
3. buy 430ex and put batteries in it
4. what to buy - external cord recommended

so now i also see non canon flashes... now i like my lenses as they are within what im using... and i do notice that i need some sort of light...
i see others posting non canon models..
YN560s, Nissin Di866

now i could get the 430ex but doesnt swivel 180 degrees... i see a used 580ex for $300... do i need to pay $300 for that one when the 550ex can be had for $150?

help me decide please because all i know is that it flashes light and dont really know what features a joe-schmoe would use.... mainly indoor pics are of kids, b-days, 4 times a year indoor banquets for kids...

the 17-40 is not an EF-S lens. The 17-55 is.

The 430 will swivel 180 degrees, but not both ways.

If you are looking to put a flash on camera and bounce with it, and money is an issue, pick up one of the ETTL capable YN flashes.

+1 to everything here. Although the manual YN flashes are great as well.

I am partial to the YNGUO series, especially the manual ones like the YN460-II and the YN560.

I'm partial to Canon EX flashes as they tend to insure compatibility with future developments in the Canon body line.

Yes. I have a Sigma Ring flash. When I got my 50D it was not compatible. Sigma was great about it. All I had to do was ship it to them, they fixed it and shipped it back. I just thad to pay to ship it to the but it still was a pain. So it can happen.

Yes, get 430EX/EXII
My only complaint with this flash is that it doesn't swivel 180 both ways
Other than that, amazing flash
There are two new flash announcements that you might want to check from Canon

I think every strobist should have at least one Canon flash, be it a 430, 550 or 580...after that 3-4 more manual flashes. But I feel it is essential to start with one you know will always work ttl any time you need it on camera...

i need to do some serious reading tomorrow on flashes...

i thought a flash is simply a flash.. it sends a light that you can bounce off say the ceiling to not get that shine in the eyes or forehead...

im starting to see that there are all kinds!!!!!

so a 430 is old.. other than that it has less features than a 580... guess what i need to then know is....
will a general person like myself going to benefit from a 580 with all the new options over say a 430....

my son has a spring concert coming up... remember the dark dreary pics i took??? the onboard camera made the pics kinda ok... but still not sure if even a flash will help....

and you can see those pics again here...
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=975735

now i know for situations like this... flash will be tough... so still if the 430 will do ill go with that.. but if the 580 has features that i would use.. ill go that route.. but if the 580 has features that is like owning a sportscar in a traffic jam... well you know what i mean :D

I have a 430 exII, a YN460, and a YN560. I'm very happy with the 430, was stoked on the 460, and am very impressed with the 560.

I never use e-TTL, I'm forcing myself to work with manual flash. I think in the long run, it will be completely worth it.

now that was some good read! bw!

since that was more 430ex oriented... i searched the 580 over there... now both are great readings..

i only ordered the yn-468 for the $100... thought of the cheaper one but got to have limits... so this will get me started until it breaks.... hopefully that dont happen...
