I would love to see your best image just as it was taken by your camera and lens. The only editing you can do on the picture would be to re-size it per POTN's image size rules. So that means no sharpening, cropping, adjustments or anything like that. Just the image as you snapped it.

List the camera and lens you used along with basic EXIF data, such as exposure, etc.

I think this can be both fun and informative.

There are a lot of adjustments you do in the camera if you shoot JPEG, and it's impossible to show a picture without post processing if you shoot raw, so I'm not quite clear on how you propose to do this and how you draw any conclusions from it.

Chopper_Al - Well, you did say "Fun" - and didn't say "DSLR" - so, I'll play... Though as Anders says - I'm not at all sure what it's meant to prove....

Canon SX10, Aperture Priority, 572mm. Exif with image...

And from the ridiculous to the sublime - let's see what others do...

The problem with this is, those photographers who choose to want ready to go images out of the camera will choose to use Picture Styles with WB adjusted, and framed carefully, whereas those who expect to adjust will take with a neutral picture style, maybe a bit more lazy on the WB...

Did you resize the image? (I don't think the SX-10 will shoot 800x600)... If it was reduced, it's not 'straight out of the camera'. There was editing involved. Shrinking an image reduces noise and in some cases can hide a slight lack of sharpness.

well since the maximum pic size on potn is 1024 either way i guess this thread will be severely limited in participants.

1D4, Sigma 24-60, ISO 6400, JPG right from camera through eye-fi to computer, resized in CS3 and posted.

Post processed version after that...

I suspect that Chopper Al's intent was good. Since it's his thread, I'll let him clarify how he wants to structure the rules, but I can see it might be fun to see what folks come up with, by not doing a lot a PP.
Because I can tell you that virtually every shot that I post up has a at least some post work, and some of them have quite a bit of work done to them. Let's see what he says.

Hey everyone,

I guess I should have been a bit more descriptive in what I was looking for. Cropping or resizing to meet the requirements of POTN is okay. I shoot with a 40D now and my images always seem to need editing. I shoot in neutral mode (all settings set to zero) and the sharpness doesn't appear to be in the images unless applied in post. Colors and levels need to be adjusted, etc. I've tried using Live View to manually focus the lens. It looks pretty sharp on the LCD, but still seems to come out soft.

I was interested to see other people's straight out of the camera pictures to see how they turn out. By seeing the cameras, lenses and settings that others use, I hope to find out what I am doing wrong or right. I figure that others may find this useful as well.

For instance, here is a picture I took this past weekend when my wife and I went to Niagara Falls. As I am still learning, I realize that I should have been shooting at a faster shutter speed to help minimize camera shake. I am sure there are other things wrong as well.

Camera: 40D
Lens: 70-200mm F/4 L USM
F-stop: F/14
Exposure Time: 1/30 sec.
ISO Speed: ISO-100
Focal Length: 73mm
Image re-sized in Photoshop Elements 4. No other processing performed from the original JPEG straight out of the camera.

Thanks...
Al

Thanks for the photos folks.

This kind of helps to make my point. The image posted by exwintech is sharp with good color and contrast. I know that P&S cameras are set up to provide the best possible image. Then we have TeamSpeed's picture. Again the sharpness, color and contrast are all there. You can see the fine hairs in the eyebrows and pores in the skin.

Both are great shots.

Thanks...
Al

Al,
Okay, here is my entry, from a trip to the car show the other day. This was just converted from raw to jpg and resized to 1024x1024. I set the WB to auto for this one. Now, I can tell you that I have also processed this photo for my website, and in that case, I tweaked the WB, added saturation, contrast and sharpening, in addition to doing a slight crop.

Regarding your shot of the stream and river bank, here is what I would have probably chosen for the shot: maybe iso400, which would have given f/11 and 1/250th ( assuming I got my reciprocals right ! I'm sure someone will point it out of I'm off ! )
Oh, and I'll throw the exif at the bottom of this post for my shot.

A tribute to today, 5D2 w/Sigma 150 macro, ISO 12800 (banding becoming evident, but post processing removes it pretty easily)

The post-processed image is below that, you have to post process to get the most out of the images...
