Rain protection

I'm going to Alaska this Summer and I'd like to get the right rain protection for my camera. I have a PowerShot SX20IS. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Right now I've gotten away with zip lock bags, but, not for this trip. I don't want to be afraid to use the camera when I'm outside in the variable weather up there, nor do I want to take too big a chance on ruining the camera.

Thanks!

Plastic Bags and Poncho are good.
But they make waterproof containers for P&S.
I am going to the rain forest with such and have used in Alaska.

I'd go with the zip lock bags you've been using, or maybe look at something like the Ewa-Marine bags. Most rain covers, even the OpTech RainSleeves, are designed for full-sized DSLRs.

Thanks for the advice. I'm nervous about chancing ziplocks on this trip. I guess I'll take my camera to a local shop and try some out instead of ordering online. What I've looked at online I thought looked bigger than what I needed.

I have a 20IS and was not able to really find a good cover for Alaska so I took my 40D instead with a rain cover.

After using a rain cover I think you could adapt it some what to the smaller cameras.

I also found this but it might be ok to use. Kata KT VA-801-17 Compact Rain Cover

Also this one at B&H gets mixed reviews.

I am always willing to try things for vacation. I bought one of the plastic underwater cases for a trip and it worked great.

I use a pelican case, fit to size.. but its 100% water tight and unbreakable, one snap access for the camera and extra batteries..

for the 7D I brought it up the Zion Narrows, And i used a kayaking dry bag to protect it if i fell in,
Good luck !

Over the years I've done most of my climbing in Glencoe, roughly on the same latitude as southern Alaska and with the same (wet) maritime climate. Film or digital, I've found cameras more resistant to rain than you'd expect.

Really, it's down to common sense. In heavy rain, I'd shroud the camera in a thin-gauge plastic bag with just the end of the lens protruding. The plastic is so thin that you could manipulate aperture ring and shutter dial quite easily in an old manual Pentax or Nikon.

I found more problems from condensation even with GoreTex rain gear than the actual rain. Otherwise, light rain is not really a problem. More important is to keep a clean lens cloth available to clear rain drops from the front element.

Relax - and enjoy the trip.

Thanks for the notes. I'm starting to wonder if I'm over thinking what I'm taking for the trip. We're not doing any boat trips, just a lot of walking/hiking. I think a bigger concern will be downloading the pix daily, so, if something does happen to the camera I won't lose all of the pix.

We've been travelling the north for years. This past year, with the 7D and my S5IS, I didn't take any special measures to protect my gear. If it was drizzling, I'd pull my coat over my head and take the camera out of its case to take the shot. A few times I used my hat over the camera. My A70 has been used in the rain many times without issue.

Bigger issue was the sun ... often times the best shots were INTO the sun and it was a challenge to capture the best image.
