I just got around to doing the math myself. With the focal length set to 6mm (effective), an aperture of f5.6, and a manual focus set to 5', that gives a DOF starting at just over 2 feet from the camera and extending into infinity. Not something I use very often, but it's nice to have available as an option.

Hold on there!

"Effective" focal length is a dubious term, useful only for comparing small format cameras to 35mm film in terms of field of view. Using a fictitious number to calculate DOF doesn't work.

Or did you mean 6mm actual focal length?

Hi Curtis:

You're correct, you caught my error. I meant to say "actual", not "effective". The settings I came up with are correct, though, and I spent a little while testing them when the sun peeked out for a few minutes today. Thanks.

Hyperfocal distance is the distance at which everything from half that distance to infinity will be in acceptably sharp focus. It's a concept related to depth-of-field, and is determined by the lens focal length, the aperture setting, and a somewhat subjective variable called the "circle of confusion" which is related to the magnification of the image required to create a print of a certain size.

You can learn more about hyperfocal distance and depth-of-field here (external link).

Here is an Excel file (external link)you can download to creat depth-of-field tables and other neat stuff.
