I'm about to start my final year project at University and I've decided to create a database in which users can store their photos and then search for a particular photo.
I need to find out what headings people would be interested in storing their photos under.
i.e. by date, location, people, activity etc.

This would then display the relevant pictures, and by combining catagories the correct photos would appear on the screen, rather than the user having to search through lots of other photos.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

I aplogise to the mods if this sort of thing isn't really allowed.

Dave,

My view is that your system should allow users to define their own search categories. Yes, I am sure there will be a few "standard items" that would be in everyone's database that you could predefine, but you need to allow users to add new ones. Take "location", for example, for some people this might be "My Back Garden" or "The Tennis Club"; others (like myself) will want to add place names depending on where they've been.

I suggest that you have a look at some of the currently available software to see what's good and bad about what they do. Evaluation versions can be freely downloaded for several of them.

Regards,

Roger

I have been playing around with some of the software available currently to do just such a thing. So far, I have not been crazy about any of them. My favorite so far is the Imatch. Problem with it? Clunky user interface and too complex for my needs.

Good luck with your program. I could use one that hit thr right spots.

Thanks for the input.

One or two user defined headings are a good idea, like you say not everybody is happy with "Nature" or "People" as a general heading.

I'm in the process of downloading evaluation versions, but on a 56k line it takes a while :(

kd6lor - I haven't heard of Imatch, can you post a link to their site.

Thanks
Dave

Check out Imatch at http://www.photools.com (external link)

This program does a lot. Is so complex, if you don't use it for a few days you will need retraining.

Thanks for the link, I've downloaded the software and it seems very powerful.

The writer of the software has responded to me on another forum and explained the features of the package.

I intend to create something similar to IMatch, as a lot of people seem to find it very useful, although possibly a bit complex for the "average" user.

It doesn't matter if I create somehting that isn't new, as long as I create it myself.
