DPP crashing on Convert and Save

I am cleaning up my tiff files from my slide scan of last week in DPP. When I go to save them, I get an "error occurred" message and DPP won't save. I have tried the following:
1. Go to File, choose Convert and save, and try saving as every possible file type and with different names
2. Go to File, choose Convert and save, then choose a new folder (ie, changing the directory)
3. Doing all of the above in Batch Process instead of File.
No Go!
Will DPP not save files that were originally tiff instead of raw?
Thanks

Diane

Not shure what might be the cause of your problem, but I can confirm that Convert and Save does work on a TIF image (TIF to TIF) previously created by DPP itself.

I do have TIF files, though, produced by other programs, that would not open in DPP.

So, you had non-originated-in-DPP tiffs that wouldn't open, whereas mine will open (created with Epson scan software) but DPP won't save convert or save changes to. This is just so frustrating. You would almost think Canon wants us to buy Adobe products??

Have you tried just Save or Save As rather than convert and save? "Conver and Svet" is to convert from raw, as in DPP is a "raw converter" application.

Chas, yes I have. All it saves is a copy of the full, not cropped version only now you can see the marquee around it. In other words, it won't actually save a new version, just the old with my editing layer on it. I can't actually generate a new cropped photo. I have the sinking feeling that since my tiff's were generated by the Epson software of the scanner, DPP can't/won't do anything with them other than let me view them and let me pretend I'm editing them. Looks like I'm off to the store for Photoshop Elements and I'll just use DPP for my 60D's raw images.

Yeah, DPP is a limited parametric image editor. It makes a good team with PSE.

I'd think Canon couldn't care less what software you buy. By bundling DPP and other software they are hiding their cost in the price of the camera and thus forcing you to buy them, the same way MS forces you to buy Media Player. What you do after-market doesn't affect them.

For resizing, cropping, converting from TIF to JPG and other manipulation I use FastStone Image Viewer.

Fast, flexible (even color-managed, if you want) and free.

I just read another user can't even save and convert his raw images from an S95 with DPP, even though DPP was provided with the camera.

That would need some investigation, but with regard to TIFs, you need to consider that TIF files come in several flavors (single or two-page, compressed in different ways or not at all ...) and it's not uncommon for them to be incompatible across different software.

Oh boy, and I just went out and purchased PSE9 in the hopes of working with my Epson scan generated tif's. Here's crossing fingers it works.

From my experience Elements tends to handle things like scanned tiffs better than DPP would -- realize that DPP is Canon-centric and so may not "play well" with files from other sources, whereas Elements is designed to "take all comers" as much as possible.

Just received an email from Canon tech support confirming that DPP is designed to deal with Canon camera generated files only - no apologies, that's just the way it is. So my plan is to play with DPP for my 60D generated files +/- PSE9 as needed, and see what I can do with my Epson generated tif's in PSE9. Thanks for all your responses to this thread.

Glad to have that confirmation! A lot of us have seen this "misbehavior" in DPP with Photoshop-generated tiffs and it's good to hear the "official" stand by Canon.

DPP can do anything it is designed to do with all my Canon dSLR's, and including my S95. And I've not had a problem with importing TIFF's into or out of DPP.
