Lately I've frequently read and heard the flash is dying out. It's not supported on the I-pad and the vast majority of the small portable web devices. Why is this? What's the replacement? I personally like flash websites and slideshows and I really wish I could view them on my portable web browser on my cell.
So why do so many people claim that flash is going to the wayside and why don't the vast majority of portable devices support the format? Is there something better out there that I'm missing? Am I just completely off base here and flash isn't dying out at all and the newer devices will eventually support it? I would love to hear your thoughts, opinions and facts :)

Apple or more to the point Steve J does not like flash, Not really sure why.
From what I understand HTML 5 is the next great thing that will replace flash.
Time will tell I guess

Flash is supported on everything except the ipad/phone/pod. Android supports it. HTML5 can do a lot of things that previously required Flash but there's still a ton of web site with at least some Flash content and it'll be that way for a long time.

I've read that the vast majority of stuff on the interwebs that requires Flash are pron sites. Now we know why 7" Android tablets are so popular, they're easier to hold in one hand.

The argument is that Flash is too CPU intensive and therefore significantly reduces battery life on portable devices. My personal experience supports that argument. I have both a Mac laptop and a Windows 7 laptop and my battery on both drop at least 40% faster when I am on a site with lots of Flash.

It is, in fact, pretty much just Apple leading the campaign against flash. I've been an Apple fan for over 20 years, but I'm hardly a Jobs apologist...in this case, however, I kind of agree with him. Flash is great, and does great things, but it is, as mspringfield said, very CPU intensive, not to mention buggy. I think Apple is a bit misguided to be so vocally anti-Flash, but their ultimate goal is probably for the best...flash is outdated and does, indeed, suck battery life out of mobile devices.

However, it's going to be a very long time, methinks, before HTML5 takes over in full force, seeing as Flash is so deeply entrenched in so many places. Still, if I were designing a website today, I'd use HTML5 instead!

But it won't work in the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer....at least not the last time I checked.

Most things that Flash does HTML5 can do, Apple (SJ) is forcing developers to learn how to code in HTML5. If you play a youtube video in HTML5 (youtube.com/html5) and then play a regular video, you'll see a large difference in your CPU usage, which ultimately affects Battery Life, (something very important to Apple)

You can just use the 32 bit version of IE. Windows 7 gives you both (A 64 bit install of win7 has no problem running 32 bit programs). I really can't think of any compelling reason to use the 64 bit version of IE over the 32 bit.

It's really a matter of flash being processor and memory intensive, which is no good for any device, but is especially bad for mobile devices. Flash will go away, but probably not this year. It will take a while for all the old flash applications to be replaced.

Mostly, the problem with Flash is that it's resource intensive and does not leverage the gpu for video playback. That is changing with the recent beta of Flash player that supports h.264 hardware decoding of video, but it's not back-compatible with the millions (billions?) of flash video and animations that are out there, so it has to switch back to its cpu decoding, which kills battery life.

Flash was developed for a desktop world, not a mobile world. If it survives, it will have to evolve substantially and I'm sure Adobe will try to do what it can to ensure that.

Apple fanboys love to complain about how buggy Flash is but I can only remember one Flash induced crash on my PC ever.
