This was taken about 15 miles from downtown. There is a natural gas drill site in the foreground that had a bunch of hydrogen lights on, so the lighting was very difficult.

I just bought my first DSLR a few days ago, and this was around my 800th shot taken. Obviously I have A LOT to learn, but would enjoy any tips or critiques.

It was shot with my Canon XSi with EF-S 55-250 IS glass.

Thanks. I liked the blue, but I also liked the green below. I also leveled it out but can't decide if I need to crop out more of the sky and less of the earth ...

I'd shoot it from the other side... much better vantage points. There's some really good spots on the river to shoot from.

This image distracts me for a few reasons... the black above and below can work, but the pole seems to "bridge the gap" and ruin things for me.

I think you'd be better off to shoot this earlier in the evening when you still have natural blue light left in the sky. It will make the buildings pop from the sky background quite a bit more.

Lastly, you need a tripod.

Keep at it! If you ever want to hook up with some of us, there's a few of us that shoot together in the DFW area, usually once a month.

Too much dead space and foreground (trees, etc.) blocking the skyline. As Todd suggested, pick another vantage point, preferably on the west side of town. Shooting from the west, you'd be ably to catch the golden sunlight hitting the glass on the buildings. Try shooting earlier to take advantage of the setting sun and colors...this would look more pleasing from an aesthetic point of view as opposed to the blackness of the night.
