Hi all,
I had this message from my Flickr page from this publishing company wanting to use a photo of mine of a church.
Here is the message

Hi there

I work for a company that provides editorial and design services to the publishing industry and we are currently researching images for a new guide to British churches. I would like to use your image of the church at Yapton in Sussex at around 1/8p and I wondered if it was available for editorial use? You will of course be fully credited.

I would be grateful if you could let me know at your earliest convenience whether or not this is of interest. If so I will be happy to provide further information about the book.

Kind regards

Can I ask to be paid for the use of the photo? If so how much is fair? I guess if I ask that they will probably go to someone else and try again?
They are a business making money, and it seems that they dont want to even pay a small amount for the use of photos. Who wants a credit, I want some dosh :)

Thanks
Ben

You can ask, but the email does not make it likely that there are interested in any payment. I would make an offer to them of non-exclusive 2 year editorial use for 50Euros and see what happens. There is no good reason to provide images for free to a for profit project with limited exposure.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're not giving away their work.

Ergo, you shouldn't, either...

Throw a price at them and stick with it no matter what. Credit isn't worth squat (in most cases).

Credit is a bill you have to pay at the end of the month.

Thanks for the advice.
I will do the 50 Euros for 2 years or whaterver, and see what they say.
If things work out, I could pack my job in as a member of the British Parliament, yay! :-)

I see that you are in the UK, I would seriously suggest that you look at the NUJ website, they have standard rates of freelance work. I think that for what they want the going rate is quite a bit more than 50eur or even £50. The NUJ really helps us by publishing standard rates, rates that actually allow freelancers to earn a decent living wage, or for the amateur to do OK out of the occasional editorially useful picture.

Tnx Alan,
I had already sent off a reply with the 50 Euro fee, but surprise surprise I have not heard back from them!
It would have been handy having 50 Euros as it would have paid about half of what my Big Stopper cost me last week :-)
Ho hum!

Update:-

I have just received an email from them. It is for a AA book about churches in the UK, and are willing to pay me £30-00 for the photo. About US $50-00?

I am happy with that, as it's better than a smack in the mouth! :)
Im a pro now...Yay, and the drinks are on me :D

Congrats on being paid.

Their use doesn't really sound like 'editorial use' though. It's clearly commercial if they're publishing a travel guide.

I'm not in the UK so I haven't seen any Automobile Assoc publications, though if they're anything like the local ones here in Australia your photo will be no more than a 2x3-inch image with a listing of tour times and local hotels. Regardless, make sure you get a copy! (of the page, if not the whole book).

I like making photos and sometimes I think I'm getting better... then I realise it doesn't matter. I like making photos!
