I was practicing product photography over the weekend with my new 60d. I had the camera on tripod, and the 430EXII on a separate tripod, wirelessly controlled by the 60D's pop-up flash. I set the 60D to mirror lockup which I have not used before. I have a cheap-O eBay remote shutter - it has a radio remote that's broken, but also a shutter button on the wired remote receiver. I also have the 60D set to back-button AF, and full manual ISO/aperture/speed.
For mirror lockup, I have to press the remote shutter button twice. I presume this is normal - press once to move the mirror, wait a second for any residual vibrations to go away, then press again to trip the shutter and put the mirror back down. Is this correct?
My concern is that the wireless flash was firing at both button presses, even though (to my understanding) only the second button press does any work. Is this normal? Seems like a waste of flash cycles and battery. I also played with the shutter timer (instead of the remote shutter) but if I recall correctly, that didn't make a difference; the flash still fired twice. What am I missing?
While we're on the subject, any other tips for this sort of work?
