Innovatronix is going to be showing some new portable battery solutions at WPPI, due to be released in Spring/Summer 2011.

I don't think the buzz has hit the net yet so I'm pretty sure I'm the first to report this information. Images will follow once I get the go-ahead to post them. At this time I can only mention the products and general descriptions but I will tell you that they look REALLY GOOOOOOOD!

The original Explorer 1200 is being discontinued but the XT and XT SE will still be in production.

The two new products being shown are the XT3 which is about the same size, shape and weight of the Explorer, Explorer XT and Explorer XT SE but there are some improvements and an exterior facelift to the housing and the bag.

The XT3 specifically addresses the ongoing issue of digitally controlled and bi-voltage strobes. Details as to what that specifically means will follow as I have them or as they leak to the internet.

Since the XT3 will be an improved version of the Explorer instead of a replacement I expect that we'll see an increase in price but I don't have pricing yet either.

The other new product, which we all knew had to be coming from Innovatronix to keep up the competition and keep things interesting, is the Explorer Mini. The Mini is not a Lithium battery solution. It's just a very compact, lighter and more portable solution that will have the same specs as the Explorer but will also be addressing the issue of digital and bi-voltage strobes.

I won't have these units for testing for another month or so but I'll certainly report back with any and all information I can.

Sure thing!

I'm hoping that this is going to resolve all the compatibility questions with bi-voltage strobes. That might be a bit optimistic but those were the things mentioned to me in the pre-release info and since compatibility seems to be such a common topic in question with a wide range of answers, having a battery that just worked and eliminated all the "maybe" and "we don't know as of yet" answers would be great.

If that same technology is incorporated into a small battery that you can carry over your shoulder and they have those two products working and performing well then they'll win a lot of people over that might be on the fence because of the unanswered compatibility questions.

Thanks for the info, as a BXri owner I am really interested in a battery system that just works with my Bi-Voltage strobes. I look forward to more info as it becomes available.

Sounds great - I was about to order the XT SE for my Calumet Genesis monolights. Sounds like the XT3 may be the way to go... depending on the new features and pricing.

Regards,
Jim

What's become of the Tronix Explorer XTLi that Innovatronix was/is developing jointly with Tanala in Germany? Will Innovatronix not be marketing their own version?

I'm waiting to hear more about that. I relayed to Glen some of what we had said when we saw the images. I don't know where they stand with the XTLi.

I'd love to get ahold of a new battery that handles both BXri strobes at one time. Maybe I should wait on buying the new battery and use the Dlites on location until the announcement.....

This is the preview link up on the Innovatronix site now:

You can see what these new toys look like?

I think I'll have the Explorer Mini before the XT3. Still not sure of the ETA.

Regarding XTS and XTLi... as of right now they are being marketed and sold only to European markets. It's going to be a while before they appear in the US.

It'll be interesting to see a comparison of the Explorer Mini and the VML. I can hardly wait. :)

I noticed that the new Tronix Explorer XT3 is still SLA battery powered. I wonder if the mini version is also? If so, how is it able to be comparable to the larger units?

Quoted from the site: ("A much lighter power supply yet with power comparable to Tronix Explorer XT3")?

Do they mean comparable power wise? Recycle time wise? Reason says something has to give or otherwise why buy the heavier version?

To me, investing in "new" SLA powered battery packs kinda feels like buying a "new" analog wide screen television a month or so before everything went digital. I expect a wave of reasonably affordable Lithium powered battery packs to pop up in 2011 and beyond. SLA is a dying technology.

It is promising though that the new Tronix versions supposedly address handling the challenges of using digital and multi-voltage strobes better. And hopefully multiple units at that....something the otherwise excellent VML can't do.

At a guess probably capacity.....
