Hi again everybody,

This time we have a set of recent shots taken at both very short and (for us at least) very long distances.
These are all shot with the SX30, and all at the long-end of the lens, even tho some were taken at quite close range.

First, here's another portait of our Bold Mockingbird. But this one is actually a medium distance shot (700mm eq @20ft), which was deeply cropped (... it's roughly 2mp of the original 14mp frame):

IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/BirdsBlossomsButterfliesVol5/mockingbird0985/1189409923_BrqZf-XL.jpg

This closeup of one of our remaining female Bluebird fledges from last season was shot with the 1.7x digital TC (1428mm eq) from @ 8ft. This is full-frame - no crop:

Here's Missy (our mother Bluebird), also full-frame at 720mm eq from @10ft:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/BirdsBlossomsButterfliesVol5/bluebird1117/1187883707_ZyjRK-XL.jpg

This male Bluebird portrait is another pretty big crop, taken with 700mm eq at @12ft:

And here's one of the Yellow-rumped Warbler, also a pretty big crop, taken with 700mm eq at @15ft:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/BirdsBlossomsButterfliesVol5/yellowrumpedwarbler1569/1188804541_GdFnh-XL.jpg

A male Cardinal, full-frame with 840mm eq from @30ft:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/BirdsBlossomsButterfliesVol5/cardinal9495/1184690636_ASjf5-XL.jpg

Another Mockingbird shot, full-frame with 1400mm eq (using the digital TC again), from @50ft:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/BirdsBlossomsButterfliesVol5/mockingbird1044/1185459601_TUiqr-XL.jpg

And a long shot, sundown Flicker. Again with the digi TC at 1428mm. This is a 25% crop from @100ft:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/BirdsBlossomsButterfliesVol5/flicker0876/1184342226_j83Fn-XL.jpg

These shots were taken hand-held in Manual mode, in a wide variety of lighting conditions.

We hope you enjoy them,

Kenn

I love them all Kenn, but particularly the Mockingbird composition... that belongs on a cover... lovely work... I am creeping ever so slowly to the "short lens" season when my warblers and sparrows return...

Great shooting Kenn. An interesting collection of near and far shots. My favorite is the second Mockingbird shot.

Kenn, you continue to amaze me with the quality you achieve with that type camera. I recently recommended this camera based strictly on your results. I realize your skills are part of the overall results.

Very nice series ! ;)

I know i used to get some nice captures with the then popular SX10. Their great little P&S cameras.

Terrific series, Kenn. Andrew is right: you do make that camera sing... My favourite is the mockingbird: a great pose showing so much character. Plus I'm very impressed by the IQ after having been cropped that severely. But great work all around.
