This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new editing tricks.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture, re-sized to exactly 1000 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being re-sized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 4 Days (96 hrs) and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #345.

This game ends February 20th at 6pm, Eastern Standard Time

Please remember to resize your workup to 1024 pixels wide

Just a quick go, nothing big. Curves, gradient layer for a vingette, blur layer, and crop.

Cropped so the subject would fill the frame.

To highlight the eyes:
Vignetting and exposure gradients
Sharpening of eyes and forefoot claws
Lowered exposure of the back and leg where they crossed the face
Reduced saturation of the tail

Opened in ACR, increased highlight recovery and blacks.
Opened in CS4 and made big crop. Adjusted black and white point, LAB colour boost then changed back to RGB mode and CTRL/click on green channel then image/apply image. New layer filled 50% grey and painted back some detail in eyes, sharpened in luminosity mode, stroke white and black.

I used photoshop to make exposures of -3,-2,-1,1,2,3, and I used the original as exposure 0. I then use photomatix to make a HDR photo. I then did some editing such as removing saturation to get black and white, and played a little with the black and white settings.

How about an OOB....

duplicated original
curves adjustment
added new layer
rectangle selection for frame
inverted and filled with black
selected inside square, grew selection by 10, inverted and filled with white
this created my black border
used layer mask on border layer to make tail come OOB
used brush to create refined tail hair at edge
flattened
used selection to create shadow for tail, filled with black in new layer
used resize tool to grow shadow layer and reduced opacity to "11"
flattened

Crop. Removed CA by desaturating the blues. Adjusted contrast. Decreased luminance on the green leaves. Burned the background light and the eyes. Used a layer mask to decrease the brightness, except on the raccoon.

Sorry for the delay in judging - It's really great to see some new faces in the Before & After.

Well I liked all of the workups - but NigleD is going to take this one. Something about the crop and how the eyes that kinda pulls you into the image.
