I just picked up a Quantum Turbo 2x2 batery pack, and in the bunch of stuff comes a dummy battery that one is supposed to put in place of one of the AA's inside the Speedlite. However, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the 580EX doesn't need this - that one would use C.Fn-07 instead. First of all, is this true? If so, which option within C.Fn-07, 0: "Recycle with both speedlite and external power source" or 1: "Recycle only with the external power source"?

I am using the set-up to shoot night high school football from credentialed areas.

Thanks!

Dennis

OK, no answer yet, so I'll add another question: the Turbo 2x2's instructions say to use Alkaline AA batteries along with the green energy saver dummy battery, not NiCad. How about NiMH?

Thanks in advance,

Dennis

I'm certain that would work, even if it is not the optimal solution.

Alkalines have a lower self-discharge rate as compared to NiMH, but it isn't a big deal.

Bob,

Thanks. Are you familiar with the C.Fn-07 in the 580EX? I presume I'd use this with the Turbo 2x2, and set it for option 1?

i use cf 7 with my turbo - i have NiMH in my flash - yes option 1 - it will draw the power from the turbo and the 4 AA batteries will run the low voltage

It seemed to me that setting the option to 1 is the normal way. By that, the external battery pack runs the flash head and the internal batteries run the control electronics.

I don't see that this option has much to do with the actual type of AA batteries you have in there. However, my preference is to use primary batteries.

Bob,

Yes, the two questions were unrelated.
