I did get a confirmation but it only read this:
SG816PXAFG Sigma 8 - 16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM AutoFocu

with that confirmation... it's end of story. you got the item that is on the order confirmation.

perhaps you were too excited while placing your order, that you simply clicked on the pentax mount? i'm not saying you did, but it's a possibility.

sometimes it's just the buyer honest mistake.....but they sure are quick to blame on the merchant ordering system.

mpix345, bps, and sigma pi, I don't know if you guys noticed, but this thread is about a (valid) complaint against Adorama, and your statements as given are irrelevant.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I don't think our comments are irrelevant at all. We're simply showing support for a company that has always taken good care of us. I realize that you don't like Adorama, and I respect your opinion, but that doesn't mean that we can't voice our opinion too. When someone titles a thread telling folks to beware shopping at Adorama, I think it's ok to share our positive experiences.

How I dislike these Adorama flaming threads. ('specially when they surface on a Friday or Saturday when I'm 'off'.....)

I've checked in our system and it is beyond doubt that the OP ordered a Pentax mount.

Our website states very clearly:
http://www.adorama.com …FAQ#Our%20Return%20Policy (external link)

"Items that qualified for free shipping that are being returned will have our standard shipping charges deducted from refund or credit".

The 'free' shipping cost has to be paid for - and if we make the mistake then there is no question but that we would cover it.

But think of it this way, if we offered a 'free' Thinktank backpack with every lens ordered, and you returned the lens, would you expect to keep the backpack?

I did not want to start an anti-pro argument. I was venting on, what I think, an insane policy for an e-tailer to use. I have never encountered anyone trying to recoup shipping from the original order...ever.

I have been in touch with Helen. I do believe she has helped many others before but I feel I just got the company line. I do not fault her though and I do not even know if she believes in that policy.

Live and learn. I carry on and shoot.

I did find the Sigma 8-16mm elsewhere and it is awesome!

Seems to me that you have little experience with returns. There are PLENTY of retailers out there that subtract shipping costs (both ways) when returning goods that were not either damaged, or the mistake of the retailer.

You're crying over a mistake you made. You expect companies to eat the costs because you screwed up or simply didn't like the product? Not all retailers offer free shipping both ways.

Most likely the person who fulfilled your order pulled the wrong mount. Happens all the time in warehousing operation.

That is actually impossible with our system:

Your absolutely correct ! And thats the reason Amazon out-sells most all of the other vendors since they dont heed this shipping cost practice.

Can't argue with that.... Adorama is a family-owned (and run) business

Actually if you return to Amazon they do deduct return shipping. Unless of course you lie when you are filling out the return form and blame it on a defect or not as described.

To the OP, you really expect Adorama to pay for your mistake? Granted it was an honest mistake but you obviously ordered the wrong item. I guess maybe you thought by posting here that you could force Adorama to give you a full refund. I am just amazed at how lately the public has these unrealistic expectations. I am glad they stuck to their policy. A customer with your expectations and way of handling yourself is not worth having. How can they make money if you buy something open it and then return it? If they sent you a box that had been opened you would be posting on here, "Adorama sold me a used item".

Being in the car business I find it amazing how people abuse their cars and then are upset when it is not covered by warranty. If you don't change your oil as recommended and your engine fails how is that the manufacturers fault?

Somebody has to pay for all this "free" stuff.

Oh yes, Amazon DOES! I ordered the wrong item for a Christmas gift for my wife. They had shipped it for free, but then deducted the shipping cost from my refund when I returned it. And this was a product sold by Amazon, not a third party through their website.

As I just posted over on FM (apologies if you are following both threads), a number of companies charge a re-stocking fee, some as great as 25%.
Do you think that if we changed the wording slightly to call it a re-stocking fee, that it would be preferable?

I'd say no. It's clear to me as written. In fact, I'd rather you say exactly what you are charging for. Calling something a restocking fee often makes me wonder what is being charged for returning an item. Your current policy says specifically what the charge is for, to recoup the shipping charges that you orginally "ate" to sell the item.

The only thing I'd like to see from a consumer standpoint is the "free shipping return" policy a bit more accessible. Like when an item shows "free shipping" have a nearby link saying "click here for details of free shipping". It appears that quite a few people are honestly surprised to have shipping charges deducted when they return something that is non-defective. Maybe that would save a few of these threads.

One less person buying from Adorama = more stuff for me to buy from Adorama.

Thanks! I've passed that on to the management team.
