I have had a G11 until I replaced it with a G12. I seemed to be missing my G11 as it just seemed to take better shots than my G12. Now I am not sure if that means I have a faulty G12, or if the G11 is just better.

Here are my issues
- In Auto mode, the flash (when fired) seems to blow out my images (not tremedously, but it is bright)
- In Program mode, with flash on, it is either dark or overblown again
- in Manual mode, with medium flash setting, it seems very difficult to control the flash as it overblows the picture still (either reducing ISO, increasing shutter, etc...) Its a feat to get it right.

All other settings are standard/default. I have checked them all.

My G11 seemed to be troublefree in this category, but what is going on with my G12?

I don't have a G11, but a G12.

In manual mode, you can adjust the flash output to three different levels. After pressing the flash button (>;), use the wheel in the front to adjust or press 'Menu' to do it with menu screen. See page 111 of the manual.

In other modes such as Program, Tv, Av, and quick shot, after pressing the flash button, I can adjust the flash exposure compensation +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments using the front wheel. The setting display is shown in the lower right corner. See page 110 in the manual.

In Auto mode, there's no way to adjust the flash exposure comp other than to turn the flash on or off.

This may sound stupid, but make sure your exposure compensation is set to 0. (top left dial). If you are still having problems, try resetting to factory defaults.

After resetting to factory defaults and you think you still have the problem, your G12 may be borked and you can send it to Canon service center while it's still under warranty.
