While walking around the Montrose Harbor Bird Sanctuary in Chicago, we found 2 old Baltimore Oriole nests in one tree. Looks like a good place to look for them this Summer! The nests had a large amount of fishing line in them. Being an avid fisherman, it renews my determination to porperly dispose of old line.

Do they tend to use old nests again, Franz?

I am no expert on this. However, I have read that Orioles and other birds such as Robins usually build their nests in close proximity to old ones. Often they use materials from old nests in the construction. At times, the old nest is used as a foundation for a new one.

In this specific case, I have seen two nests in this tree, appearing to me to be in the same spots for several years. I am going to look for a picture I took of a nest here in 2009 and see if I can associate any branches. If I can, I'll post a photo here.

I looked and the branches appeared significantly different.
