Going to Germany for work. Will stay for 2 weeks. Is there any cool shop to visit in Dresden Germany. I might be able to get to Berlin as well.

Just sold off my Canon 50mm 1.4 and Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro. I am thinking of purchasing some high quality older German optics. Since Dresden was East Germany before, maybe I can find some cheap high quality Russian copies as well.

Need to be able to adopt to my 5d2 with a simple adoptor. Are there old Leica or Zeiss lens be readily available there?

Also, how do I get VAT back? Is it done at the last airport of leaving EU?

In case anyone is interested. I visited a couple of shops in Dresden. Not many lenses in stock. One shop did have a Zeiss 35mm f/2 w/ Canon mount. Price is very high for US folks due to the exchange rate. I have also counted for VAT refund as well. So indeed, the price for Zeiss lens is about the same or cheaper in the US than in Germany.

When I was in Berlin from 2008-2010, I visited Calumet Photo a couple of times to rent lenses, buy filters, etc. The strength of the euro and the 16.5 VAT will lead to sticker shock. I can't say if they will have what you are looking for, but it is a nice shop. I had other avenues to get my VAT refund, so I will leave it to others to guide you on this.

Store hours are more limited than in the U.S, as is the norm in Germany. 9-6 M-F, 10-1 Sa.
