As you can see from my sig, I've owned some decent lenses. I get bored of them and keep changing things up.

I went to primes with the Sigma 30mm and LOVED the idea of primes, but couldn't get the Sigma to stay sharp.

Well I just purchased a 50mm 1.4 today from a member here. Hoping I like it on the 1.6x 40D :/.

Anyone else use this combo and love it?

Thanks

Looking at your gear list you'd better suffer from the seller's remorse.

What do you mean by "stay sharp"?
If you're getting soft photos, then it might be time for a trip to Sigma for calibration.
If you're getting OOF photos, then it's probably your technique because f/1.4 has way too thin DoF and requires some practice.

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

See below, I had back focus issues with the lens new from Adorama. But there's more to the story. I just didn't want it to be the primary focus of this conversation.

Right, I'm aware of this. It took me a while to get used to it. But after doing a focus chart and some test photos in real life, the lens had a pretty bad back focus problem. I sent it off to Sigma and it came back great...but it had already frustrated me quite a bit. I could have easily kept that lens, but I used its "troubles" to justify selling it in my head...along with the notion that I plan to move to a full frame 5DII soon.

I suppose I shouldn't be broadcasting it had sharpness issues, when that thing came back from Sigma it was tack sharp and very impressive.

I wish I posted my images on the forums more often, I do it as a hobby. I take couples and headshots for free in my spare time. I just never get around to posting them on here. Probably because I'm a little conscious about my lack of editing skills. I only can do basic things in Photoshop Elements 8.

But you hit the nail on the head, thats exactly why I decided to force myself into primes to have fun and just experiment, rather than having 2 rather expensive L lenses that I didn't justify owning.

im not trying to give you a hard time... but i see many ppl that do what you do and dont produce many images...its like they are more into the technical aspect and having gear(maybe to look the part? i dont know)...and they either dont have time or just dont take photos but have all this stuff.

everyone is different, all goode! whatever rocks your boat, right? :)

Hey man, i respect you for being honest. I could see myself falling into that category.

As an individual....I pick up hobbies then learn them inside and out. For a while..I owned a mustang. I learned to work on it myself, modifiy things on it, I made it as fast and as good looking as possible. I knew the Mustang car and motor like the back of my hand. I know how things worked, why they did what they did, all the flaws.

I think I do the same with photography, I'm in the middle of learning. I want to know all there is to know and experience it first hand. I know for a fact that I'm going to try a macro lens someday, just to learn it. I have a long way to go, I think sometimes that aids my constant gear switching etc.

I think it's time you actually went out and took photographs instead of worrying what might have been..

^^^^

It doesn't but getting out, taking a few decent pics with the gear you've got will alleviate any gear frustrations or buyer's remorse.

Ah, a valid point.

I'll be taking more pictures now that the Snopacalypse is over and warmer weather is upon us.
