Does anyone no of maybe a plug in or any other way to have Lightroom create a jpeg of each raw file as it is imported from the card. I like to make jpeg copies of all my images and I figured it would be great if I could have Lightroom automatically do this during import. I know I can export my raw files as a jpeg to the same location as the originals but I was trying to skip that step. Thanks!

If your desire it to create a jpg on import without any editing, why not shoot in jpg?

If you still want the raw file, you could shoot in jpg + raw.

I don't want to tie up the buffer in the camera by shooting jpeg and raw. I would rather have speed and memory of shooting just raw than the convenience of shooting both raw+jpeg.

I don't know of a way of doing this. It doesn't really make any sense to me to create a jpeg before processing the Raw file -- your jpegs would lack any benefit from the processing which to me would make them pretty useless.

I guess if you had presets that you applied when importing that you were sure would need no touching up then sure, it would save the one step of selecting and Exporting files...but it really wouldn't save much time and I personally wouldn't use that because I do process my Raw files to whatever degree and then I only export to jpegs images that I want to make use of (for the Web, printing, etc).

I do this only for my family/kids shots. I take a LOT of shots of the kids and while I do edit the better ones, I dont edit the average ones. The reason why I make jpeg copies of them is because they are a lot easier to manage and I want to make sure that, if I came to an untimely demise, my wife and kids will have jpegs copies which are a lot easier to manage.

Well, if you find shooting Raw+jpeg slows the camera down then I'd say you will just be best off just doing a batch conversion -- it doesn't take all that long. Be aware, though, that Lightroom by default will need tweaking to get an image "jpeg-like". I'd go for the Canon software Digital Photo Professional to get a quick jpeg rendering. But, of course, that would also mean getting your in-camera settings properly tweaked to get the best possible jpeg.

I do edit the better ones, I dont edit the average ones.

IMHO, if its not worth editing, it's not worth saving.

if I came to an untimely demise, my wife and kids will have jpegs copies

If you leave them a hundred "better" shots, nobody is going to look at thousands of "average" photos.

Do you have kids? Because if its in focus and it's a picture of my kids then, for me, it's priceless

This couldnt be further from the truth. I am in the process of scanning thousands of slides that my grandfather took in the late 60's and 70's. As far as quality goes they range from awesome to what the hell is that a picture of? Watching my mom and grandmas expression of these "average" photos as i play them back is wonderful. A picture is worth a thousand words especialy when they mean so much to the people close to you.

Here are three examples of very average pictures that mean a lot to me,

My mom,

what you can do is just highlight the ones you want as jpegs and then create a folder within the original folder called 'JPG xxxx". if you want, you can highlight them all.

Shoot RAW + small jpeg. It hardly affects the buffer and it's a simpler workflow. If you want to only shoot raw you'll need to do an export from LR.
