For wildlife, wildbirds I am not a fan of the 100-400. EF 400/5.6 is a much better choice. It is sharp even with a 2x TC on a monopod, MF of course. But, now we are getting into the area where your technique will make all the difference.

I'd look for a Used Sigma 120-300 f2.8 and hook it up with a 1.4 tele later on. Price will be dropping soon on the non-OS models soon. Great lens, unbeatable versatility.

Canon 5Dii, Sigma 24mm f1.8, Sigma 50mm f1.4, Sigma 85mm f1.4, Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX Macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 Macro, Canon 135 f2L, Zenitar 16mm f2.8 fish eye (on the way)
A pile of ocf gear and modifiers.

But 300 is just not long enough. I sold my copy of the Sigma 120-300/2.8. Did not take TCs well and too much money. General rule for a birding lens: Get the longer lens even if it is slower. I do think the new 120-300/2.8 OS will be wonderful for many outdoor sports.

Thanks again guys, i think ive settled on the canon 100-400mm. Cant wait to order it!

100-400mm is a fantastic lens. Its so good if you sold it in 3 years time you would get most of your money back, providing you look after it :)

You will not be dissappointed ;)

For any zoo that I've ever been to, 200mm won't do! Some photos can be taken with a 300mm, but my 400mm 5.6 is the best zoo lens I have. I've also used the 1.4 extender with the 400mm which works out well.

I've been fortunate enough to have both the 70-300L and now the 100-400L. Between the two the 100-400 wins hands down for outdoor anything, except portraits maybe. The 70-300 has amazing IQ period. Awesome IS and is lighter, but the 100-400 IMO is still a better outdoor lens for it's versitilaty and extra reach ( I happen to like the push pull zoom). It's no slouch for sharpness with good technique either. I don't care so much about the IS, but weather sealing would be nice.

The 100-400 is a great lens, so useful. You will love it! If you are going to spend the money, you won't regret it. Get what you want, within reason.

Mark--Just saw this----I have a 100x400MM on my 7D and really really like this lens-----not the best in low light (you should be home by low light anyway) but I give it a 9.999 on a scale of 10----you won't be disappointed

Naw...just switch lenses and shoot some landscapes or something with a tripod. If you're out shooting, I say don't go home until the light is gone and the clouds roll in :) (or you get hungry, that's always a good excuse, too)

Why switch? The Pump can handle landscapes too.

Although I enjoy my Sigma 150-500 OS which is a great lens, don't rule out the older
Sigma 50-500 EX DG, which is also a great lens and can be had new and used for a good price.

Here are a couple examples from the 50-500 EX DG

I have been happy with the 100-400. My technique leaves a bit to be desired but you can't blame the lens for that. :)
