Well I was reading the review at photo-i.co.uk and I noticed that it said 'not US' next to 'CD tray', which I figured meant United States. So maybe the CD/DVD printing is not available on the U.S. version? I did some research, the U.S. canon site makes no mention of it, but the U.K. one does. Also, the cnet asia site mentions it, but the U.S. site doesn't. So, is it true that the U.S. version can not do the cd/dvd printing? I guess it's not that big of a deal, but it seems odd why the U.S. version wouldn't have it.

It's still an excellent printer without the cd printing ability.

I got stuff for taking pictures. :o When things are unclear - It's time to refocus.

I believe it's something to do with patent reasons - there's a US patent that Canon believe blocks them from shipping printers with the CD/DVD tray in the US.

Alright, thanks. That is intersting though, but no big deal, it wasn't gonna effect my decision anyway (although it would have been neat). As far as the reviews go, it looks like a fantastic printer.

I just got a Canon iP8500 for Christmas, thanks Santa!

I'm extremely impressed with the quality of color prints, but not so much with B&W prints. I expected this since I’m used to doing my own wet B&W darkroom work. That and I can be real anal about B&W prints… :D

I’ve searched the forum a bit and haven’t found any discussion on aftermarket B&W systems such as Lyson’s Daylight Darkroom (external link). Lyson says they’ll be supporting Canon printers in 2005. I haven’t heard back from them as to when they are going to start supporting the Canon line, seeing as how 2005 is almost over…

Is anyone using a B&W printing system on a iP8500? Is there one available for the iP8500?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I'm just about to buy my own iP8500 and am interested in all comments about this one. I have another post that I'll print here below but for your problem (and mine soon) what happens if you turn off the colour setting for the printer. Will it only use black ink? What happens if you just want to print text?

My other question..............

Hi everybody,

I'm just about to buy an iP8500 printer and after reading the other posts I wonder what my setting should be. I have PSCS and have a spyder to set the screen.

As yet I have no idea about paper or an ICC, if I need one.

I have been using the colour setting shot at www.colourmanagement.net (external link) as standard.

Any suggestions for Proof setup and colour settings. Here in UK we use Adobe RGB 1998 & Euroscale coated v2 (CMYK).

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

JOJO

I have the ip8500 and love it. I'm only using Adobe gamma for color mgmt, yet my prints match my monitor just fine. Try this article at Steve's digicams.http://www.steves-digicams.com/techcorner/June_2005.html (external link)

Jojo,

Despite using the grayscale setting on the printer, the B&W prints are still color casted. The printer has a black ink cartridge, but has to blend the color inks to make shades of gray. It's hardly noticeable on Canon paper, however it is more pronounced on Promaster paper.

It prints text like any other ink jet printer.

Overall it's a great printer. My only complaint is the lack of a B&W ink system for it. Color prints on Canon's semi-gloss paper are excellent!

HTH,
Mike
