Well, it appears that DPP will not export to PSE directly. I installed PSE9 today, did some raw processing in DPP then wanted to export to PSE. But the export to Adobe was greyed out which leads me to believe it won't export there since I don't have the full Photoshop. Not a happy camper. Am I missing something?

I think that Elements doesn't have the direct "Transfer to Elements" thing with DPP.

The way to go is just do a Convert and Save from DPP as a tiff (not just a Save), then you can edit it in Elements.

There is a solution for that.

Tony, thanks. Yeah, I figured that was the way I was going to have to do it. Oh well. Or should I just create a dng file (keep my original CR file archived) and do all my processing in PSE9? Or would you say the initial processing tools (white balance, tone, contrasts, etc) are better in DPP and I should just do things like cropping, brushing, stitching in PSE9? You gurus probably just shudder when a newbie joins!

yb98 thanks but fiddling with registries is just too scary for my level of computer comfort.

Diane, different people have different preferences regarding working in DPP or the Elements Raw processor, and regarding DNG. You don't need to convert to DNG to do your work on Raw files in Elements, since version 9 does support all our Canon DSLRs. Some people convert everything to "future proof" their Raw data and backup the CR2s as well, though, like you mention.

Take your time. One thing that will be helpful is to carefully compare your results in DPP to what you can do in the Elements Raw processor because DPP is quite different in how it gives you a "starting point" that is very much like the out-of-camera jpeg the camera would give you and this can be very handy for doing quick conversions and such. So your current workflow may in fact suit you best -- work in DPP for your basic Raw processing, use it for conversions that don't need further image editing in Elements (you can convert to images for the Web, printing, etc, right out of DPP) and then when you need the abilities of the Elements pixel editor you make the conversion to a tiff and open it in Elements.

Elements does have the Organizer tool, though, that you can actually use separate from the Raw processor if you wish to keyword images, set into collections, and such, or you may in the end decide that you are happy with the Elements Raw processor -- it does have some tools that can go beyond some of what DPP is able to do. unfortunately, DPP and Elements don't "share" Raw processing info so at some point it becomes an either-or choice -- you process an image in DPP or you process it in Elements and the final outcome will be from one or the other, but it will all be up to you to decide what works best for you.

My personal approach is to use Lightroom as the "home base" and to occasionally use DPP for its capabilities to do a quick snappy conversion, and to resort to Photoshop only occasionally.

Thanks Tony for taking the time. You are right of course, for now I just have to play with the same images in both DPP and PSE9 and see which one suits me better regarding final product and intuitiveness of the interface. If I had the guts, I would try the registries rewrite that yb98 talked about in order to import directly from DPP to PSE but that just gives me the heeby-jeebies.
I got Kelby's book today for PSE9 and I'm finding out that PSE9 Organiser has some considerable limitations on the Mac platform compared to Windows - I'm a Mac user wouldn't you know it.
Thanks again for your patience!

Ah, I didn't know that about PSE and the Mac -- interesting.

One thing to check out is something that "appeared" in, I believe, PSE7 (or maybe 8) and that was the "hidden feature" that you could actually open Photoshop Bridge, the "center" for organizing and automating tasks in CSx, and through it open a file in the full version of Camera Raw, in other words, the one that works in CSx rather than the "trimmed down" version that by default opens from the Organizer (and that you are stuck with in Windows).

Now, the question: is this capability still there in PSE9? I don't know, and since I'm not a Mac user, can't find out first-hand.

So, Mac users who have Elements 9 and know what I'm talking about, tell us! Is Bridge and the full Camera Raw plug-in still functional? If so, maybe give Diane and others a pointer to getting to them!
