You can usually buy the parts through Canon; in the US, Canon Parts will even work with you to find the part or subassembly you need. If you send it to a repair center, you're also paying for highly-skilled workers even if it's for a fairly simple-seeming task. A local camera repairman may be less expensive than Canon. Jon

Only positive thing is that Canon service has been responsive and has not charged me anything. Hopefully this time I can get a more permanent repair.

Seems like a common problem.I have the same on a A.580 and a SX110IS.Using elastic bands to secure the batt latch.
