These kinds of things dont affect smart shoppers.

IF you REALLY want a 7D, you buy a cheap broken Canon P&S from Ebay for $10, call up, and buy the 7D for $1087ish plus Tax. Its that easy. Sitting here b!tchin and moaning about the rebates is useless and just plain dumb.

The rebates have worked exactly this way for years, I dont see why people are surprised.

You can always be hopeful. Maybe Canon will get the message that games like this just tick off loyal Canon users.
I thought the 7D was 11XX now through the CLP..Throw in tax and shipping..Might as well go new..

Thats what I did.. No rebate.

CLP for me worked out to $1204, I could've purchased new with 1 yr warranty for $1329 last night. For $125 I'd go new.

You guys were under the impression that these rebates were for the customer. They seem to be just dealer kickbacks for helping them raise prices.

The problem with the $1329.00 last night was it was out of stock and I bet they cancel all those orders due to a "price problem" or some other reason. Retailers don't seem to honor advertised prices anymore (even though I thought there was a law against that). Amazon canceled a ton of TV orders this past christmas because the price was posted wrong on their site.

I just received my second CLP 7D and it's not perfect so I was planning to buy a new 1 for roughly a $200.00 difference and send the refurb back for refund.

Yes I know refurb does not mean brand new however it's refurbed which SHOULD mean any parts that are worn or defective are replaced. My latest refurb has a ton of scratches on the top LCD cover and the screws all show where it has been taken apart. This is not a big problem for most people however I am OCD...

yeap, very typical of Canon once again

I'm not sure what Canon has to do with this. Canon offers the rebate, but the dealers are the ones who feel like the rebate is intended for them. Adorama had 7D for $1479 last night, tonight it's $1699 - $200 rebate. Some overly greedy dealers like Cameta Camera went far enough to price the camera for $1549 after the rebate (Link (external link)) making their pre-rebate price of the body $1749 which is even higher than MSRP.

Simply not true. Canon enforces a minimum advertised price. If dealers lower their prices below MAP, Canon won't reimburse them.

Yea. He rebates are pretty crappy. Even if you purchase a camera. Looks like I won't buy. I'll wait until a real sale comes around :)

So MAP = MSRP and above?

No, it equals minimum advertised price.

If you look at the rebate poster, you'll see if has prices listed on it. Canon is enforcing these prices at dealers.

I'm sure if a dealer wants to charge more than MAP, that's their prerogative.

True, but online stores have been using that "place item in the cart" trick to get around that for a while.

It's no secret that stores are getting greedy. For example I was price watching a TV at Bestbuy. It was regular price, then went on sale. I didn't buy it, but a few weeks later I saw an "AS ADVERTISED" label next to it. The "advertised price" was actually higher than the regular price.

When Canon raises the prices to retailers, rebates are generally offered for the first few months to delay the price-change for customers. We don't raise prices on our existing stock to match the new prices, which often means that customer prices drop initially; however within a week or two, when we've sold out of almost every Canon unit that has a rebate on it, as well as a few that don't - we have to pay the increased prices when we re-stock.

At the same time if Canon decides to enforce their MAP program more aggressively, it leaves us no choice but to offer the renewed inventory at Canon “estimated retail prices”.

Manufacturers usually require retailers to meet MAP restrictions in order to participate in a rebate offer program, and many of Adorama’s regular list prices are frequently too low to be able to offer the rebates. If we don’t comply, we’ll lose our Authorized Dealership Status

When a manufacturer or US importer changes MAP parameters and enforces them vigorously, retailers are left with no option. Therefore when our inventory is exhausted, prices have to go up to reflect the new MAP. Nevertheless, prices at Adorama will at no time be raised above MSRP.

MAP restrictions mean that when the rebated lenses are marked up to the Canon "estimated price," the cost of the unit with the rebate applied will in some cases either be equal to, or in some case greater than the regular discounted price that we were selling them for before the instant rebate program went into effect!

The reason that you may find units pre-price rise at a smaller or independent retailer while prices at the bigger retailers have already increased, is simply a matter of scale; stores that carry & sell on from a larger inventory, will deplete stocks bought in at the pre-price rise prices far more quickly than smaller stores with a slower turnover.

Also, the price at smaller retailers is rarely as variable as at larger outlets, because they are generally unable to offer the same level of deep discounting due to their smaller purchasing power, so price increases are not as great.

As retailers who care passionately about the products we sell, I can promise you that we don't like it any more than our customers do.

There was exactly this same debate before the last round of rebates. Both Adorama and BH responded to the posts and explained the MAP restriction.
No need to cry.

Nothing wrong with calling out the manufacturer for a deceptive selling practice. Canon operates just like the sleazy car dealer ships and the bait and switchers on cl. Nothing wrong with let a frustrated consumer vent.

I bought mine without the rebate for a lower price. I guess the best plan is buy a camera right before a rebate *LOL*

Adorama. I love you guys:) Thanks for taking time to reply
