Sales tax is not your local stores problem, it's your state's. they collect it for the state genius. if you don't like it, then complain to your politicians and if they do not do anything about it, elect new ones.

what are people going to do when online vendors have to collect sales tax for the state they are shipping too....wait i know...more crying!

Because I live in a province that has HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) whereby federal and provincial sales taxes are combined, I have to pay it no matter where I buy (including from the states.) The HST is 12%.

Makes your sales tax seem pretty sweet, eh?

13% HST in Ontario... On pretty much everything. It's great... ;/

Just ordered a 60D, and when it gets here, I get to pay about $150 at the door for the taxes.

Sooo Your saying Nikon does not do deceptive selling practices like Canon?

Not at all, just saying that if you don't like the way that Canon does business, there are alternatives. I have no idea what Nikon's business practices are, as I have no interest in their gear.

And you could have gotten that 7D through the CLP for <$1200, even w/ your 9.3% sales tax, which would have left you ~$450 in your pocket to purchase either the kit lens, or some other lens of your choosing.

Thanks for the reply Mike. It's all good. I am very happy with my decision. The difference between new and a CLP refurb was $42.00 after all is said and done.

Would you mind going through that, as I am genuinely curious. You got a body+lens kit for $1649, and prior to the recent price hikes, new bodies were going for ~$1479. How is getting a CLP 7D body for <$1200 and then getting a kit lens net only a $42 savings?

It's funny to hear about greed because all of us are whining to keep an extra $50 of our own money. Isn't that as greedy as Canon wanting to take that 50?

people are whining not because of the price, but because the price after the so-called "rebate" stayed the same or went up. If you were buying a car for, say, $20,000 and were told by the salesman to wait until next week for the manufacturer's rebate just to find out the the after rebate price was $20,500 you'd probably be pretty upset as well.

Well some good news to end this story. My local mom and pop who had last week been selling for MSRP today honored the rebate. Bought it for $1,499. Took my Rebel XTi in on trade and I got it today. Same as online. Had to pay tax but not much more than shipping and I helped my local economy!

Feels great to support a locally owned store, and get a competitive price! Buy local when you can!

This is understood. The questions is, this is not new, why are people surprised. A simple google search could of saved anyone the worry of "rebates".

the only way you can really get a "decent" deal for the lens rebates is if you buy the body....

Everyone may not be aware of the scam. Yes, I call it a scam.

According to that rumor site there's a double rebate if you buy with a body, however, I noticed the 1D4 price went up by $200 also. So this may not be true either.

Come on now, it would be a scam if Canon offered a rebate but then had some trick whereby they could avoid paying out the rebate. Offering something at price X with rebate Y really cannot be a scam. It may or may not be a good deal, but that's just life.

Canon does what most of us do - try to keep the most money possible in their pockets. We consider ourselves savvy consumers if we diligently research all the deals and offers that are available, but we consider Canon to be greedy if they do things to improve or protect their profit margin. Doesn't seem too fair to me.

Is that what happened to someone? A retailer told them to wait because rebates were coming? Or maybe did someone see the thread here about rebates coming and assume they should wait to buy? They are hugely different scenarios.

Isn't the raising of prices to match the price of rebates on the day that the rebates come out, year after year, just plain old price gouging? not by Canon but by the retailers. I really have a problem with rebates anyway but to have to go through the hassle and extra cost to pay the same price that I was paying last week and to know that when the rebate ends that the retailers will bring the costs down to that same level just irks me. I would love to see a petition to Canon stating that we would either like to see them pressure the retailers to at least give us the consumers half of the rebate or ask that Canon ends their rebate program since it is being abused by their retailers.
