How do people get this much "POP"

The skiing shot may have used a flash. Many others look like they have been shot later in the day when the sun is lower in the sky bringing out warmer tones in skin etc and, also, if you position the subject properly, they will appear to be "lit up". That an PP.

This has no PP other than lowering the exposure in post and maybe a slight contrast adjustment (it's been awhile). Also leveled the horizon. I do recall thinking I had to bring down the saturation. There is NO boost to the saturation in this quick edit. I'm sure I could make it pop a whole lot more. I should spend some time and re edit it, better.
