I'm running a virus scan on my computer this morning and Norton Antivirus popped up a box reporting "high CPU usage" by Bridge.exe (Adobe Bridge).

It's part of Photoshop CS4 - but I wasn't running it. Or any other photo editing software.

Checking the system monitor (Windows XP SP3) I find Bridge.exe is using 25% to 50% of my CPU.

Why? Anyone have an idea?

Bridge isn't in my startup menu. After the virus scan is completed I'll kill off the process and see what happens.

-js

EDIT: I guess it is in the startup menu after all. But not the one I was looking at. I went into msconfig and checked the startup menu list there - much different.

Bridge.exe and CS4 Service Manager are both there. Why would I want these to run at startup instead of when I open CS4?

When you installed photoshop there was an option to have bridge running all the time, which makes it faster to launch.

There's probably a option to disable it buried in a menu somewhere. If you cannot find it then you can use http://www.nirsoft.net …/what_run_in_startup.html (external link) to disable it.

Thanks, Ken. I've downloaded the utility and I'll check it out when my full system scan finishes. Which will be hours from now, looks like.

In the meantime I'll go into CS4 and see about startup options...

Uncheck Bridge > Preferences > Advanced > Start Bridge at Login.

Thanks, guys. I wasn't finding it because I was looking in the CS4 menu. Once I went to Bridge I was able to uncheck it.

When the full system scan is finished I'll reboot - now that I think of it, that's probably why it's taken longer to boot lately than it used to...

Aha! Rebooted (much quicker) and Bridge isn't there. System Idle Process at 98%.

Back to normal.

Interesting. CS4 loads just as fast as before, so does Bridge.

When Bridge is running it uses 65% - 70% of the CPU.

I think we can fairly call Bridge a resource hog, don't you?

Not really. I render something in After Effects and it eats up 5+ gigs of RAM. Bridge is pretty minimalist compared to any other adobe app.

But you're talking about AE working on something actively. The OP was referring to Bridge using resources when it's not even open and running.

Yeah, 25%-50% of CPU time when it's not running, 70% when it is. Guess I need a quad-core CPU.

Actually, I don't use Bridge much anyway so the problem has gone away.

Thanks, everyone!
