I find myself reaching for the 7D often times because I can get more reach with it. But not enough to let my 5D go...

Is this a positive thing for you or a negative?

Neither. It just is what it is. Usually I can open up or close down a stop or two. I've never switched cameras just to get more depth of field or to get less.

I've been considering getting a 7D just to use for sports. Because of the lackluster 5dmii AF system.

If the 5d2 had a real AF system I suspect I'd use my 7d a lot less.

Heh! Aw, c'mon -- I use my 5D plenty as a walkaround body and use the outer focal points all the time. Low light stuff, well, I work with the center point. For sports, wildlife, other challenges, my 1DM3, sure, and I also have my old 30D lying around and have a 400D belonging to my daughter laying around as well and I can shoot with any of them gladly:)!

I use both and each has its value.

I'll second that...

Switch to FF from Crop? No, just added to!

5DMKII & 7D make a great combo of cameras for what I like to shoot. Our annual Airshow would be a great example. I used the 7D & 5D last June (bought the 5D2 a few weeks after) and both served a purpose with the 100-400 on the 7D and the 24-70 or 17-40 on the 5D.

Nice having a variety of cameras that pretty much do whatever you want to shoot. Could I use one or the other? Sure but options are nice to have!

Own a 5D Mark II that i use everyday & a Rebel. 1. The rebel works as an extender when a longer focal length is needed 2. Serves as a backup in case of emergency on a shoot. 3. Use it for vacations with a EF non L prime, as I love that combo of size and still get the amazing image quality.............So I alwasy have 2 cameras. 1 FF, 1 Crop

Started out with 30D.
Went to 5DII.
Just got a 7D to replace 30D.

24-105 feels perfect for 5DII
Have not found a lens that feels same with 30D or 7D. Maybe the 17-55, but do not want to pay $1K+ for it. So wife uses 5DII while I use 7D with 70-200 or 150-300.

Would not dump 5DII for 7D, but would not mind a 1D4, if I want to sleep in doghouse and live off top ramen :)

I started with a Rebel XT.
Switched to a 5D.
Then switched to the 7D as it suits my shooting style better.
If Canon ever makes the fabled "3D" or upgrades the 5D line to have 7D/1D AF. I would go back to FF again...if I could afford it.

I own and use all many formats (FF, 1.3, 1.6, and 2.0 crop). Each have their own strengths and usages.

But I'll tell you now, I use my 1.6 crop bodies for 90% of my paid work.
For portraiture and people shooting, it's my 40D all the way.
For event shooting, 40D most of the time, sometimes 1D.
For personal usage (like family and vacation) it's always my M43 2.0 crop or sometimes 1.6 crop.

I just find FF to be overkill and totally unnecessary for almost all my work (be it personal or paid work). The exception is the requirement for ultra resolution and detail in commercial shooting (1Ds) or architectural shooting (FF is the best format for Tilt Shift work). Shooting full frame at F/1.4 for every damn shot is overplayed and overdone. Somehow people have concluded that maximum blur = maximum awesomeness.

Yes! Big mistake! Seems I always learn the hard way, now I am looking for a full frame again. BCDO1 has the answer, they both have their own value. To bad I learned it the hard way.

Different cameras, different uses. Love both the 7D and the 5DII. Nice to have two cameras on a trek. 7D for the wildlife and 5DII for stills. I really missed the reach for birding with the full frame. Now it's not an issue anymore. Sometimes use the full frame for closer shots.
