did you ever switch to FF only to go back to crop format?

I agree completely. My camera succession has gone EOS A2 -> EOS 3 -> EOS 20D -> EOS 1D Mark II -> EOS 1Ds Mark II -> EOS 7D. I love the full frame experience, but the larger size of the 1Ds or the lack of features at the pricepoint of 5D bodies has made my 7D the right choice for now. Give me a 1.3x crop in a 7D body and I will buy it tomorrow.

I think they couldn't build them fast enough and many pro's would snap them up as backups.
