i just purchased a new Metz(for Canon) 58 AF-2. lots of power, swivel head, and an extra fill in flash built into the front of the device. i'll be testing it well over the next couple/few weeks and let you know how it goes. here's a pic of the unit on my camera:

and the first pic i took, bounced it off the ceiling(no tone or WB altering): HERE (external link)

nice. brightness with the lens closed. sharp pics all the time, yay! much cheaper than the 580 EX II , plus well built German made.

A couple of decades ago, wedding pros who used Metz gear found them to be very reliable in exposure, and physically dependable units. But we all thought little of the 'wink light' because it was a harsh light source (being so small)

I have been a fan of Metz flashes since the mid 1970's..

The 60CT1 is the best flash I've ever owned.. Built tough, heaps of grunt and makes the 580EX look/feel like a toy..

I always used hammerhead style flashes going back to the Metz 202 and 402.. It took me a long time to get my head around hotshoe mounted flashes..

And whenever my 'ETTL controlled' hotshoe flash descides to unexpectedly behave as a 'ETTL uncontrolled' hotshoe flash, I seriously have doubts about the 'progress' afforded by the newer unreliable technology!

It reminds me that KitchenAid makes a very good stand mixer, but its many other kitchen appliances have reliability issues...Canon should learn to leave flash design to someone else, because they seem to have a very flawed implementation, with ETTL firing off at full power randomly and with External mode undependable (unless you think that 'dependably underexposed' is an attribute).
