Yes, I am more than sure the Sigma 85 has better IQ than the 82L. I personally like the L's bokeh better, but the Sigma has better contrast/color. Realistically you won't notice the Sigma's IQ in prints, but you may notice the better AF and ~1000$ saved.

man, i wish I got the Sigma now instead! :(

And about contrast and colors I really wonder who meseared such thing .... and were are these results ....

Anyway it's absolutely uninteresting debate..

Better auto focus? Not with the three lenses he tested.
IMHO all those perfect moments and smiles missed with the Sigma are definitely not worth the $1000 saved.

Granted, Sigma definitely has it's issues with needing MA, but it's a significantly faster AF motor than the L. The copies I've rented have all AF'd perfectly on my 1DsII, but I imagine buying new there's the typical Sigma prime AF issues.

dude, as soon as you said the Sigma has better AF vs. the Canon 85L I determined you have no idea what you are talking about. no idea whatsoever, and i'll never take a post you write as good advice from here on out.

The problem isn't that it needs MA, it is that it is very inconsistent which is much worse than back or front focusing problem because you can't trust that lens to nail the shots when you need it the most. And what do you need ultra fast AF on a lens designed for portraiture? Do you expect your models to be running around? The 85L is slow in relation to other lenses but it is plenty fast for what it was designed to do best. If you need ultra fast AF, maybe you're looking into the wrong lenses?

Between the two, the biggest difference is the low light AF accuracy. The 85L may be a bit slower from MFD to infinity (which doesn't bother me at all), but there is no hesitation even in the dark (I've tested both the Sigma and the L).

I'd say it's different enough just because the focal length is so different. To me, the difference between 50mm and 85mm is pretty substantial. But yes, I get what you're asking... I think that entirely depends on your style of shooting and only you can decide if that extra 35mm is worth it.

I thought the jury was still out on this subject? From everything I've read the AF on the Sigma is more accurate so it hunts as contrast changes. Some people like this accuracy, others prefer the canon. I only own the sigma, so I can't compare. I've got focusing and exposure setup separately so its not an issue for me, I lock on focus and then shoot multiple exposures, its very accurate at 1.4. Maybe on servo its more spastic?
