IBM all the way. Got a IBM x22 at home and at work we have a wide selection (R and T´s) of IBM laptops as we are IBM Buisness Partners.

If you cant afford a new IBM you might wanna look into buying a used one...i would personally rather get a used IBM than a new Dell.

I have a T42 at work and as much as I love that I am not willing to pay the price this cost mainly because of the brand. Used is also out of the question.

Laptops does not have any laptops that appeal to me. The T42 they have does not even have the resolution the T42 I have at work have. 1024x768 vs 1400x1050.

According to IBM the T42 with the 15" screen and ATI Radeon 9600 run 1400x1050. Maybe laptops.dk made a mistake in the description? Try e-mail´ing them with the question.

I doubt it because You just said

as they buy the parts from the cheapest place and assemble them in Denmark

So it is entirely possible they have choosen the cheapest alternative and just put in a 1024x768 card.

I echo the vote for IBM thinkpads. Relatively tough and great for field work. They now have a convertable tablet that is getting great reviews.

Dell is probably the best value but their 'customer service' is by far the worst I have ever had to deal with. I have bought 3 computers and 1 PDA from them but will never buy from them again. The hassles they put you through to get service is not worth the few hundred savings in cost.

A google search will find many good reviews on any laptop out there.

The laptop is no diffrent from IBM´s. They dont put "diffrent" parts in from 3rd party vendors. Lets say they buy a T42 in france and exchange the keyboard to a DK layout and thats it. They dont fumble arround with the parts and exchange them as they like.

I just email´ed laptops.dk and the spec. on their page are correct, so i must have looked on a wrong page at the IBM website.

I'd go with Toshiba. Long record of quality machines, second (maybe) only to IBM - and don't forget IBM's laptop business has just been sold to Lenovo in China (who have been making them, but under IBM's supervision). I'd want to see how the change in management shakes out rather than assuming the products won't be affected. If you decide to go with Dell, get the Latitude (business) line. Personally, I don't trust Sony - they toss in too many prorietary bells and whistles to increase the "gee whiz" factor and I've known too many cases where the drivers and applications for all these "great new features" meant constant problems with re-boots and crashes. Toshibas have all the important features, and are built solidly and consistently. Our 1996 Pentium 133 running Win95's still up and working and putting the lie to those who say Windows needs constant reboots.

I have a HP laptop from work which is quite nice, but if I'd buy one myself I'd probably buy a Dell.

My experience with IBM computers (for PCs and laptops) is not that good: we now have new IBM PCs at work, but even though they have the same processor as our older HP Compaq PCs (2.8 GHz Pentium 4), they are far slower, probably they have very slow harddisks. In my opinion, IBM is more expensive but not better than for example HP or Dell.

I haven't used an IBM since my T21 (I think?) but I really liked it. That said, I have been satisfied with my last three Dells: CPxH, C640, my current D810. These have all been used for VB, PowerBuilder, Oracle, SQL Server, ... development.

That must mean that IBM use a different version of T42 internally. Interesting.

I have a Dell and am happy with it. My son has an LG which is downright awesome. If I replace the Dell at some point, it will be with one of those.

For regular use Dell is good, although in my experience the Compaq is just as good (I'm on a Compaq nc8000 at the moment). For field use you can't beat a panasonic. I've used a few and they are great, though you do pay a premium for the fact they are built to survive being repeatedly dropped on a concrete surface. :) Sunlight readable screens, dust seals, and being as solid as they are you feel like they will last for ever.

I can't comment on how good it is yet but I just got a laptop
from Cyberpowersystem.com after hearding many great things
about both their laptops and desktop PCs. Being my first laptop
I can't compare but it'd be interesting to do a side-by-side with
a "Common" brand like Dell, Toshiba, IBM, etc.

I'd go with Toshiba... just my 2 cents.
I would never buy a Compaq, IBM or HP. Dell would be good if you anticipate needing a good warantee... although I've heard some mixed reviews about their support.

I've owned several different brands, and they all worked fine. Currently I'm using a couple Toshibas. I've also gotten good service from Sony, and in my young, foolish days, Apple Powerbooks.

The only laptop that I've ever had a problem with was a Gateway that I had to retire due to a broken hinge.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

I've owned/used Toshiba and Dell - no problems with either brand.
