I first showed this shot to John Stirratt during the Jeff Tweedy/Autumn Defense tour last December. He put me in touch with Lakland and here are the results in the March, 2011 issue of Premier Guitar Magazine (this is a low-res screen capture, the link to Premiere's site is below).

nicely done!

by samples, do you mean electronic or prints? carrying around prints would seem to be way too much hassle keeping them wrinkle free.

Thank You!

Ordinarily I'll have a portfolio ready to pull out and show on my iPad and, in a pinch, my iPhone 4. I do try to bring prints whenever I can - i use a 8.5x11 portfolio album from Micheal's which fits in the laptop compartment of any bag I have with me. On this night of the tour, I was there as a fan rather than a photographer, so I had a mounted print for him to autograph. He liked it a lot and told me he had been looking for a shot for Lakland to use.

Talk about tone...care to share any of your post processing secrets? This is great.

Thanks - i would have to look back, and it might scare me. I spent about 20 minutes processing the original shot for the print. However, once John mentioned using it for the ad, I suddenly hated the original edit and spent hours (okay, days) re-processing it over and over. i gave them the choice of the original edit plus 3 new versions. The one in the ad is my favorite.

Very well done. And Lakland basses ARE killer instruments. I had one of the low-end models and it still rang like a bell!

Congrats on getting that great shot published. It looks like a perfect match for the bass advert.

Awesome! Congrats.

(this is one great example of why one shouldn't cut off the guitar head in the composition :))

Nice, hopefully you got paid.

I receive a lot of emails by muscians for ads or by the companies themselves and 100% of them have been tire kickers. "We don't have a budget to work with." -- Yeah right, that is why you are purchasing a full-page ad in a national or global mag?

Exactly! The funny thing is that I didn't originally process this one with the rest of my shots from that show. I almost brought a shot of him playing a Hofner with me instead...

That sucks. In this instance, I was asked what I wanted for the use of the shot. Instead of cash, I requested (and received) something of value to me; something I would have paid for if it could even be bought. So, I would say I did get paid.
