"I never shoot mono," I've always said. "It sucks the life out of a photo," I've always added. Until a recent conversation with another photographer got me interested in learning a new skill. Apart from half a dozen test shots, these are my first real attempt at producing black and white street candid photography.

These were all shot in mono in-camera with light tone editing in ON1 Photo Raw 2018. Shooting in colour and processing into black and white is another skill I'm starting to learn.

Is that a bike scrap yard?

Colour to B/W conversion - getting the tonal range of the B/W is very subjective. Most of my older pics (Now scanned) have been taken on B/W film of the period but can still benefit from a few touches of Photoshop which we didn't have at the time! The most advanced bit of electronics I had at the time was an exposure meter coupled to my Leica M3. Neither the camera or the exposure meter didn't have a battery in it.
