I have the 100mm Macro USM and if you want I accept a straight trade with your 100L Macro IS. :)

I have the Non L 100mm too and I prefer the L for the focus speed which is in my tests is about 2x as fast as the non L.

I just don't want to see an issue like the 70-200 2.8L IS mk2 which is a ton more expensive than my mk1 and not a lot of IQ difference if any in real world use.

They had to update because of the 70-200mm VR II. I myself did not bother with it and perfectly fine with the 70-200mm IS I. LensRentals.com also saw lukewarm reception to Canon's tele zoom.

Another incentive to update the 135/2L would be Carl ZeissĀ® 135mm f/1.8 for Sony's Alpha mount (external link). Other than a slightly faster f-number it also has a closer focusing distance of 72cm vs 90cm of Canon's. It is the the only lens I see on the Alpha mount that is worth a second look.

A Nikon-exclusive glass would be the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. (external link)

Water resistance would be nice but the rest of things you listed are not needed in many of their primes and will only increase the price considerably. Don't look a list of don't have but look at their optical quality which is phenomenal.

The 35mm could use some work but the 85mm and 135mm are perfect and not in need of any of the things you listed.

Updating your very best products always make the best business sense. Not only have you recovered from your previous investment, you are leveraging on something that already prove to be a big seller. So there you have the business justification.

As for the technical justification, some of the features are good to have but there are others that should be there already given that we live in 2011. Eg will be faster focusing, ditch the electronic manual focus (on 85L), have a piece of rubber and call it weather-sealed? These are simple engineering improvement given today's standard.

If Canon would want to increase the price for these kind of improvement and call it a Mk II, then by all means I will go ahead to get the mk I which should have a price drop via mk II market pressure. If the price is around there, then we benefitted more since we already are convinced of the Mk I capability.

Given the fact that they are the very best lenses that Canon have and can produced, its only a matter of time others catch up if they don't do anything about it. The 70-200 f2.8 is a good example of this mentality.

My feel is that they will be updated. I just dunno when

4 or more stops of IS on a 50/1.2L & 85/1.2L would be nice but unless Nikon does it it is unlikely.

That'd be amazing, but there would be people telling us we don't need it.

This is the first thread I've read in the Rumors section that I feel might actually predict what will really happen. Thanks for the analysis, dolina! ;)

Your welcome. :)

If Sony is considered an indicator (now no giggling guys ;)) these would be the indicators

1996 EF 135mm f/2L USM (external link) (2006 Carl ZeissĀ® 135mm f/1.8 Lens (external link))
1998 EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM (external link) (2009 70-400mm f/4-5.6 Zoom Lens (external link))

So the lenses below are gonna be idle until... 2013?

1993 EF 400mm f/5.6L USM (external link)
1996 EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM (external link)
1996 EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM (external link)
1997 EF 300mm f/4L IS USM (external link)
1995 EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM (external link)
1999EF 70-200mm f/4L USM (external link)

Canon marketed 5 lenses each for 2009 & 2010. So if the pattern holds expect 2 more to go as 3 have already been announced.

The two lenses are likely to be marketed by August or Septmber which should coincide with CliQ 2011 (external link).

Expect an replacement to the 1990 EF 50mm f/1.8 II (external link) soon with USM. For the simple reason that Nikon announced (then removed mention of) the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G (external link) with built-in Silent Wave focusing motor on Wednesday, 13 April 2011.
