So one of my hobby's is buying broken LCD monitors and repairing them and I'm starting quite the collection, so I'm wondering what exactly am I looking for in an LCD monitor (for photo processing) and/or of my 'inventory' which would you recommend? The plan is sell off the extra ones and get a really nice one for photo editing and then one for video. (I'm an engineer and need a monitor that can do animations in Pro-E/Solidworks)

• Hannspree HF289H x 2
• Dell 2007WFPb
• Samsung 215TW
• Samsung 204B
• Acer AL2216W
• NEC 1860NX x 2 (Obviously not this one)
• Samsung SyncMaster 226BW
• Dell E172FPb (Obviously not this one)

The Dell 2007WFP I think was the infamous "lottery" monitor because some were IPS and some weren't... If it's not IPS, it's S-PVA, which is still better than TN. The Samsung 215TW is S-PVA as well. Pick the one you like better, or just keep both.

Did most of them just need a new backlight? I was thinking of picking up "broken" monitors myself...

Thanks for the advice! And nope.. most of them were failed capacitors/diodes/voltage regulators, I have a few (see list below) that have bad backlights, I just wait till I have a few and do a bulk order. If you need help I can give you a few resources or help problem shoot.

None. IPS paneled monitors are so inexpensive now that it is not worth the effort to repair old models. Just send them to your local electronics equipment recycling center.

 Are you crazy? I get these from the recyclers and craigslist for free and put $4-5 worth of parts in and sell them for $40-90 each. If I sold off the ones I have working (first post) I could easily get ~$500 for them all. So if you want to throw your money away, be my guest!:lol:

If that's your hobby, I'm certainly not knocking it. I used to restore vintage professional racing bicycles and my brother (a Harley-Davidson mechanic) repairs and restores antique sewing machines.

I guess the market for cheap old LCD monitors is stronger in your neck of the woods than in mine.

You could always sell them on e-bay.. they're going for redicoulus prices. 21" widescreen broken ones go for about $20-40 PLUS $20-30 Shipping & Handling it's crazy what people will buy...:p
