Here is what i do, and it seems to work.

When im taking shots, especially formals, I need all eyes on me. We always have parents and friends standing behind us of off to the sides with the P&S in hands. Some even have nice DSLRs.

After i get my light set and im ready to shoot, I turn and tell everyone present the following

"Hey everyone. I need to have the bridal party looking at me for these shots. So, Give me a couple of minutes to get the shots they have hired me to take and I will step back and you can get the shots you want. Oh and all you nikon shooters have to stand in the back row".

People laugh and Ive have never had a situation where the guests did not comply with my requests. And i get my shots for the family, come across as reasonable and a little funny.

It works, i dont have point and shoots triggering my lights, takes about 1 minute extra time and everyone is happy. Its also a good time to tell them I will sell them a photograph " super cheap" and hand them a business card.

I have no intent or desire to sell them a photo. But it does allow you to gain some control in a manner that comes across as reasonable and non threatening . And ive have had people contact me and buy some prints which i sell " super cheap". And, most importantly, ive also booked a couple of weddings with other family members because i dont come across as a photographer who is there to grind everyone for prints.

Look this is going to happen at a wedding so you better get ready and be able to handle it. I could care less about selling anyone a print. But I do care about getting my job done, and so does the family that hired me. It works and I have minimul problems.

Take a negative and turn it into an positive. Ive seen many photographers do some really stupid stuff when it comes to this issue and I believe the way they handle it has hurt their reputations. You need to be flexible. Its really not that big of a deal and to be perfectly honest, when it happens, the mothers of the brides usually step up and say something to the intruding family member. It stops instantly when Mama Bear says something.

I had one mother tell a family member (she jumped in twice and triggered my lights both times) " Im going to shove that camera up your a$$ if you do that again". Everyone laughed, she apologized and we moved on and had a great time. Swear to god, it was a priceless moment, but it could have been a negative if i handled it wrong. Moms are awesome so make them your very best friends when photographing at a wedding.

Yeah it pretty much boils down to commanding (not to be confused with demanding) respect.

I don't have an example handy, but what I often like to do is turn the tables; get behind the couple, have them OOF in the foreground and take a shot of the press corp flashing away at them. Same thing during the cake cutting. It usually makes for a nice and fun picture.

Everyones' a pro these days. Love it when a guest who's had a glass of champagne starts telling the B&G what to do when I'm taking photos.

I think people just enjoy taking pictures.

Agreed and why shouldn't they.

I dont understand why guests feel compelled to take photos at weddings....

Because wedding ceremonies are boring, and the pews are hard.

haha..funny:lol:

but on a serious note, people are compelled because weddings are family events. Family members get together at weddings, funerals, and once in a while family events.

So again, make this your advantage. How many of you guys offer additional services for weddings that would take advantage of this huge family gathering and also pad your botom line ?? WE DO !

Have any of you ever considered setting up a backdrop and bringing in a couple of strobes at a reception ??? Hmmmmmmmmm.

My assistant or my wife sit in a corner and snap photos of all the dressed up family members for the bridal party. They send the shots in their thank you cards. We make some extra bucks and i have not seen a photo booth at the receptions since we started offering the service. Im there anyway, they hired a 3rd photographer for 3-4 hours. Pays for my assistant, still make a few extra bucks, it makes you more marketable, and the families get my card and a website to view the photos. If they want a print, I sell it super cheap. Im not there to sell prints. Im there to do the job the family hired me to do and to promote my services to future potential clients. None better than a satisfied family member.

A friend of mine was married in the early 90s. She had a pro doing the photography, but at each of the tables at the reception she had a single disposable flash camera for us to use. We could take photos of each other or whatever else we wanted. After the reception, the cameras were collected, and she and her husband had the films processed. Not only did she have the pro photos, she got all of the snaps and candids from everyone else. Of course there were probably few "quality" keepers, but capturing some fun moments was what they wanted.

Im not angry or really ranting about it, I am just trying to find a good explanation on why people do this? Do they not trust us as photographers?

If everything works out as it should, their pictures will make yours look even more amazing

Also whenever I go to weddings I dress up, put on make up, do my hair, and wear a dress. This rarely happens. So I want pictures of ME. Pictures of ME with MY friends. Pictures of ME with MY date. You and the bride and groom don't care about me and my friends and my date. I'm not about to grab you and say "Take a pictures of meeee!" just so I can order it off your website. You're busy doing your job so I'll get these pictures with my own camera. This is the reason I didn't sell my Rebel (because I'm not about to haul a 5DII to a wedding I'm not paid to be at!).

And this is why I LOVE photo booths at weddings! It's a great way for the guests to get the pictures they want with their friends and dates and walk away with a copy of these pics without harassing the photographer.

I can attest to that. Biggest waste of money at my own wedding!

People just want to take photos because they want to remember that moment from their point of view. They just want to have a memory of their presents of being there and attending the wedding. It's also for fun.

LOL and the plus is that they have the photo right there so that following day they could post it on FB. Unlike from the pros, they have to wait a few months before they can actually see the photos.

For the B&G it could be a plus also, because they could see somethings that the pro didn't capture that they got.

I can just see it now- a dSLR with WiFi capabilities that can upload your images to your Facebook as you take them.
