Hello,

Searched POTN and didnt find to much information on this lens. Most say overall they are happy with the image quality of this lens, but repeated mentions of the AF being very slow & VERY Noisy. Also I guess it has a odd operation style from AF to MF switch/steps?
- Anyone know of or have a video clip showing the AF operation up close?

On paper the specs & price look to be a great, but without first hand experience I'm on the fence. Wondering if its worth it to purchase this or pay the difference for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM. Dont plan on going to FF anytime soon so its more lens/price to lens/price.

Appreciate any feedback, Thank you.

Have a great one.

Pay the difference IMO. The 30 1.4 is one of the best in its class, rivals the canon 35L in centre frame sharpness, and the AF is good.

Here is a review:

I think the review matches the general impression that I have gotten of the 28/1.8 in forums. There is also a review at the site for the 30/1.4

I have the 30mm, and am very happy with the wide-aperture performance.

I have this lens but I'm afraid I haven't used it all that much. It is larger and heavier than you might expect for a 28mm prime. The autofocus is certainly slower and noisier than HSM or USM lenses. The noise seemed about average, though, for a micro-motor based lens of this size and age. If I recall, it uses Sigma's quirky two-step Auto/Manual switching - you push or pull the focus ring to engage or disengage the focus motor and also toggle a standard Auto/Manual switch. I should note that I did have to send mine in for a free focus recalibration for use on a Rebel XTi (many of my Sigma lenses, however, required recalibration for that particular XTi). The lens now requires moderate micro-focus adjustment when used used on a 7D. I found the optics to be pretty good and really enjoyed the close focusing. I expect I'll pull it out again when the flowers start blooming.

This lens is the only reason I haven't picked up the 24L. I absolutely love it to death. It's probably my second most used lens for weddings behind the Sigma 50. I originally picked it up just to have something decently wide on full frame. Now I don't see how I could live without it.

I have the 24mm 1.8 Macro and have to say it is a a great lens. Wicked sharp at 1.8, has very close focusing, great colours and contrast. The lens is slower than an HSM or USM lens, but not by much. It is however a little bit noisy. If Sigma updates it or puts out a 1.4 version I will change the lens, but until then this lens will have a welcome spot in my bag.

Canon 5Dii, Sigma 24mm f1.8, Sigma 50mm f1.4, Sigma 85mm f1.4, Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX Macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 Macro, Canon 135 f2L, Zenitar 16mm f2.8 fish eye (on the way)
A pile of ocf gear and modifiers.

My copy is not sharp at f1.8 it's ok at f2.8 but buy f4 it's nice. It's focus is noisy but reliable even up close. The front end of mine wiggles a little and clunk's if you shake the lens. Does anyone else's have play in theirs? Is that normal? wonder if thats why mines not sharp at f1.8. I got it used for cheap on craigslist. I Only use it for macro now cause I have the Tamron 17-50 f2.8
